Learning through Drama in the Primary Years is imaginative, easy-to-follow and highly practical. And, it's great fun too! There are clear methods backed by helpful suggestions throughout as to how to best apply these within and across curricular areas.
Writing from a Scottish perspective, where I'm a heritage educator (though the book's appeal, I'd say, is universal), it seems fair to say that David's set down a treasure trove of clearly arranged and immaculately conceived ideas and approaches. And, that this is exactly the kind of resource we need to support us to meet many of the ambitious aspirations of Curriculum for Excellence.
In terms of Curriculum for Excellence, there's much of value and interest in here for teachers interested in upskilling themselves in drama education techniques. And, of added value, the methods possess clarity and versatility of use (from personal experience, it's possible to apply these to topics as wideranging as the Olympic Games and life in the trenches during the Great War). There are engaging approaches to take forward, for example: expressive arts, literacy across learning, social studies, skills for learning, life and work, responsible citizenship and many, many more. And, active learning is at the heart of all of these.
Overall, the work makes for a fascinating read, is practical and enjoyable to apply and is clearly a labour of love! This combination of interest, clear methods, fun and passion for the subject is a winner when translated into classroom terms. Put simply, in imaginative and discerning hands, this book can make a real difference to the educational offer available to children and young people. I'd heartily recommend this fantastic resource to education professionals worldwide - it's simply outstanding. And, to close on a personal note, many, many thanks for your work David!
It has a good clear layout and very clear explanations with lots of cross-curriculum examples and ideas. (Drama is not just leotards and rocks and trees, you know!) If you visit David's website or attended one of his courses, you'll understand that everything in this book is tried and tested and the website allows you to get more ideas and develop things further so you know it's up to date!
Ideas can be adapted and applied for Primary, Secondary, Mainstream and SEN education as well as youth groups and other situations where a spot of Drama might come in handy to occupy some time.
It's a great little tool kit for anyone who wants to craft something with a group of kids; so you provide the opportunities and let them bring the imagination. Then see what happens!
As a firm believer in the power of drama, practising for years, I have gathered many books but never really found 'the one'. Until now!
I can hardly believe that this is the cheapest drama book in my collection. It contains an excellent introduction, an extremely thorough middle section outlining drama techniques (logically grouped, defined and explained, with examples for use and tips for teaching) and a series of lesson plans for the primary age range. Links to other strategies, areas of learning and further reading are extremely helpful.
More than just a book, this is a toolkit for teaching and thoroughly deserving of the full five stars.
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
