This book and others by Russ Crowley are a MUST BUY if you want to learn to read and speak Thai.

Russ and his partner Duangta have developed a brilliant method for learning the Thai alphabet, and include pronunciation help, and are present online for assistance, and are THE MOST HELPFUL people you could imagine. Supportive, friendly, encouraging. I have exchanged emails with Russ a few times, and he has included me in the list of people who get access to his material first (sometimes even trials for free). The support is just excellent, superb, I can not find sufficient superlatives for Russ Crowley and Duangta's books and online support.

And for the method itself too is brilliant, especially if you are visual like me. Makes sense of all those Thai alphabet characters that look so similar at first sight!!

After visiting Thailand during my gap year, I wanted to return with a better grasp of the language. You can do elephant trekking and the Tiger Temple without knowing much more than a few phrases, but if you want to immerse yourself in the incredible culture, you'll want to pick up this book. It's got very useful information as well as sound advice (it doesn't try to pretend that learning Thai will be easy - I appreciate the book's honesty). I've been using the book in tandem with Memory Aids to Your Great Adventure. I like that, even if the language isn't easy, the book is an easy-to-use reference for the Thai alphabet as well as common phrases. If you are a beginner or simply want to perfect your speaking, then this is the book for you.

I found the book to throw too much information at you and provides no exercises for you to learn or digest the information. To be honest it made learning Thai frustrating and more difficult than it should be. I bought the book based on the other reviews but found it to be the opposite of what they wrote. And if you look at their review history they give a lot of reviews all 5 stars reviews and a lot of them are cut and paste. Make your own mind up on that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great System for Learning Thai 2 July 2015
By George S. - Published on
    Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
When I was shopping for a Thai language instruction book, I was dissapointed by how few choices were available. This one seemed like my best bet, and without a lot of confidence, I went ahead and purchased.

I'm so glad that I took the chance on this book - compared to most language instruction books I've owned, this book approaches the course material with a clear strategy and in an organized manner. The author obviously wrote the book with an eye not just to present the material, but to do so in a manner that actually made it easier to learn. There are several color-coded charts that help with learning the alphabet (which is tough) and many sections contain what I would describe as 'tools' to assist with learning.

If you want a casual phrasebook, this is probably not the best choice. However, if you are actually looking to learn how to read, write and speak Thai at a more advanced level, this is a great place to start. I plan on buying the next books in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous supplement to a traditional textbook 25 July 2014
    By Ysolde - Published on
    Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This is not a traditional textbook but rather provides additional depth and breadth that is missing from a standard introductory textbook like Thai for Beginners by Benjawan Poomsan Becker. The organization of the Thai alphabet is incredibly complex, so there's no way around that if you want to learn to read and write Thai as well as to speak and understand what people say to you. An additional layer of complexity comes from the fact that Thai children are taught the alphabet with the system described in this book (the first consonant sounds like "Gai" for chicken, the second letter sounds like "Kai" for egg, etc). Because foreigners don't already have the vocabulary you need to follow that system, then you have to add learning those reference words on top of everything else. But you shouldn't skip trying to learn the system of reference words for each consonant, because then you couldn't ask people how to spell things, Thais use those words to distinguish among the 6 letters that all sound like "k" or the 5 letters that sound like "d" etc. On top of an alphabet that includes 6 letters that all sound like K and many letters that have almost identical written forms but sound different, the system of reference words is disorienting to foreigners because some of them refer to objects that don't exist in the West (e.g., ceremonial headdress, etc) This book together with the Memory Aids to Your Great Adventure allow foreigners studying Thai to navigate all that complexity more quickly and confidently, but they aren't designed to be textbooks teaching "Hello, my name is.." kind of basics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! 28 July 2011
    By Mary - Published on
    Format: Paperback
The Thai language is a lot of fun to learn, and this book is certainly
a pleasant and user-friendly introduction. The grammar isn't too complex.
It's great for quickly building your vocabulary and getting simple phrases down. It's not really designed to just learn a few phrases that you might use on a short
vacation. It's for people that are serious about learning Thai, which is what i love most. With this book, you have the tools and opportunity to really learn Thai.

The book is greatly appropriate for someone who wants chapter by chapter break down
of speaking, writing and reading. It has good bones for beginning Thai,
great little knowledge extras that I don't see in enough books

Still, what it does it does very well, which is to provide a foundation
for someone completely new to the language to develop skill in speaking and writing.
This course offers instruction in speaking, grammar, and writing. Each
lesson gives you the right amount of information to keep you challenged, but not overwhelmed.

The great thing that the author does is really focus on the Thai Alphabet. I noticed
in many books I have passed through, there is not enough focus on the consonant or
how the vowels worked. The way the author breaks it down makes it very easy to
process and gain understanding. Great book!! Greatly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible Of Learning Thai 30 Sept. 2012
    By ShelbyDunkin - Published on
    Format: Paperback
This book is great to help you learn to speak, read and even write the Thai language. Lots of pictures but incredibly detailed so you come out with more understanding of the language than your friends who read Beginners Guide To Thai. The nuances of the language is addressed as well.

Learning an Asian language is never easy, but this author helps to make it easier by being detailed and thorough. He even has a memory guide to go with this book. Just click onto the author's name to find the 50-pages manual.

Overall I recommend this book highly for any Thai enthusiast or someone who just want to learn a new language -- which is always a great adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Easy 20 Mar. 2012
By S. Edmonds - Published on
    Format: Paperback
I tried several Thai language courses, but found each one of them lacking in the "flow" of learning. This book offers instruction in illustrations, which makes the process a whole lot easier. Each lesson gives you the right amount of information to keep you challenged, but not overwhelmed. The word choices in the vocabulary and sentence exercises allow you to quickly expand your speaking ability. -- It is evident that the writer has extensive experience in teaching Thai to foreigners. -- For true beginners to Thai. Overall - 100% recommended!
