I am a University Student studying German and this series of books have been a fantastic aid to my learning a more natural and well-rounded German. I say this series because despite the fact that I would rate the content of each book very very highly, one simply does not get that much content. The actual content is fantastic, and I was seriously impressed by how the author seems to gauge perfectly what vocab you will struggle with and what you won't (though admittedly this could be different with different people), and how the story progresses at a slow enough rate that you actually do absorb the words and grammatical structures you encounter, but retain enough interest in the story itself to go on reading until the end. I can say without doubt that as someone who has been through a fair few German textbooks in the last few years, that in terms of ease-of-learning these books are the best i have yet found. So I would sum up a review by saying simply, If you buy a few of these great books, you WILL without doubt improve your German drastically and develop a much more natural and subtle use of the language, but be prepared to buy a good few in the series, because you will finish each one very quickly.

Great quick reads in either or both languages, nice for learning or just to enjoy the story. Helpful vocabulary making it a little easier to pick up words and to save having to read with a dictionary next to the book, and the stories in these little books are engaging enough to sustain interest. Very nice, the level is pitched right - a pleasant experience since I find many language texts either too advanced for the level they are aiming at, or too boring. Great value for money too and prompt delivery.

Great books. I have the whole series. Andre Klein writes engaging stories with just enough translation included to help you really understand whats going on. A great refresher for those who have learned german before, or perhaps those doing Higher tier GCSE and AS.

Only stars because it doesn't have much value for money. There's not much in it.

I am in between beginner German and Intermediate German and find it much better reading a light German Novel of 300 pages or so, where I can really get into the story and there's more intrigue and some excitement. The words I don't know I write down or underline then go to an online dictionary.

In Die Dritte Hand it's handy to have the vocabulary there but the story is monotonous and shallow and most of all it's a very thin book for the price.

As regards the drawings: They don't do anything for me, in fact I hate them.

Sorry, Andre. Nothing personal, just honest.

Bought this to improve my German, it is great with kindle in combination with a German dictionary, it makes studying a lot easier as there is no need to go looking in the dictionary all the time and so portable!! I have recommended to my classmates!

I have read three books by this author and find the books hold my interest and help me inprove my vocabulary . I shall be buying more. I have 2 of the detective stories on my tablet and one simpler story in paperback The descriptions and spoken dialogue in the books are useful. The vocabulary and questions at the end of each chapter is helpful. The adult themes make the stories interesting

This is a great series for intermediate to advanced learners. To be honest, you could read it with less German knowledge, but you'd probably need a dictionary on hand. It is great including day to day German phrases (the things that you struggle to hear if you don't go to Germany and hear German speakers or watch any German TV) and has a short list if German translations at the end of each chapter. I read the kindle version and the only thing I find a little difficult is having to scroll to the end of the chapter to look up the phrases (if I was reading a paperback, I'd just keep my finger in the page, but you can't do that on a kindle (yet). That's just the way that they are published on the kindle at the moment though, which is a literal e-version of the book and I would think that Kindle will eventually improve this. You can get a German kindle dictionary, but they don't tend to translate the idioms and common phrases that this book is so good at including.

The stories are quite short which I like as it gives a feeling of achieving progress as you can get through each book quite quickly. They are reasonably funny too, but aren't likely to win too many literary awards.

A fantastic way to expand your German language skills though.

Second book in the series and I must say I am enjoying brushing up and extending my German.
The stories are interesting enough that you don't feel you are working through a more traditional
exercise book.
The stories are modern and just enough new language and idioms for a not very great German speaker to contend with.
Not for a complete beginner though.
