Product Description

Review

'A useful book with step-by-step coverage of all the essentials.' (Yachting Monthly, June 2012); 'This book is a simple, but brilliant concept. The ability to read the details of learning to sail, coupled with free-to-view videos showing in an easy and simple way the basics of dinghy sailing. The diagrams are clear and simple, and the illustrations are stills from the accompanying videos on Fernhurst Books' website. You can almost feel the wind and spray in some of the clearly demonstrated basics. Tim Hore does not assume you have the boat on the water waiting for you, but also instructs in both pontoon and beach launching. Even if you have a group of good friends helping you to learn to sail, this book will help immensely.' (Little Ship Club).

As someone who has recently started sailing I was delighted to find this book as it seems to be one of the few available specifically aimed at dinghy sailors. Chapters cover everything to do with sailing - what you need, what to look for, safety, getting to know your boat before rigging and finally going out on the water to practice techniques described in order to experience the joys of sailing. I found the online videos that go with the book really helpful too. I think this book is a MUST for any new dinghy sailor as a great reference and a kitbag companion!

Who knew sailing could be so easy to understand, the ability to go at your own speed and check back over areas you may be un-certain on is such a bonus for someone like me! The photos are such good quality and so in detail, especially with the knots being step by step. Being able to use it as something to test yourself with also is a huge benefit and the top tips make it fun. All in all a fantastic book that I couldn't recommend more! If you want to learn to sail this is the book for you, gives you the confidence to go out there and do it. Praise for the writer who you can tell is a sailor himself by the way he writes it.

Complements the RYA publication 'Learn to Sail.' It takes all practical and theory points to greater depths, giving excellent background reading for the novice sailor, both while completing an RYA level1/2 course and as a source of reference afterwards. Lots of photographs. Links to videos on the publisher's website. Very readable. Adult students recommended it to me recently and I will certainly be doing the same for those learning to sail in the future (in addition to the RYA Learn to Sail).

I bought the Kindle version of this as I thought the links in the book would be a more efficient and effective way of accessing the online videos. Unfortunately, the links do not function - they take you to a page of links to ads. I am seriously unimpressed. While the content of the book is fine, I cannot recommend the Kindle format. You would be better buying a hard copy and accessing the free videos on Youtube.

We learned to sail last year and always struggled to get a full grasp of where the wind comes from. This book is easy to read and the graphics make it really clear to understand what is going on when the boat sails around and now I see where the wind should be. Coupled with the videos this is a powerful publication. I also like the fact that the chapters have different colours in the corners. This makes it easy to navigate around the book.

Written in an easy to read style, and full of informative diagrams and photographs. I bought the book simply to understand the principles of sailing out of interest, but after reading this book I want to experience the real thing, so going to book myself on the RYA
courses. Would strongly recommend to anyone who wishes to know more about sailing for beginners.

This book's great. Its full of colour photos and it covers loads of stuff. I never quite got the whole points of sailing thing but this book has a chapter dedicated to it, which is nice and clear with brightly coloured graphics. Each chapter ends with key learning points, which are useful for revision and the top tips throughout are good too. It's really nice to have a good sized book completely dedicated to dinghies and the fact it comes with videos too is an added bonus. I'm not at spinnaker standard yet but there's a chapter dedicated to that so I'm sure that'll come in handy. Overall a great book, full of info and good value too.

Being a fair-weather, beginning sailor I've read lots of books on dinghy sailing. This one is up-to-date and provides clear written explanations along with useful photographs and drawings. There are also some supporting videos on YouTube.
