I came to this book after finding Pritchard's " Right Way to Play Chess" a little dry. You can't really get a better teacher than John Nunn in my opinion. Nunn is obviously a genius but he is one of those rare breed of very clever people who can put across their knowledge and gifts in an easily accessible and yet challenging way. Hence this book is thorough but uninimidating for a beginner and it should get one well on the way to playing a decent game of chess. It teaches everything from the moves and notation, through to tactics to enable one to win pieces through to the different stages of the game. It also has sample games and valuble advice on psychology and how to keep your head when playing as chess is an addictive game but can play hell with the nerves! Finally the book is very reasonably priced so I would have no hesitation in recommending it.
