Top customer reviews
Both my son and I think this new Platinum LeapPad is brilliant and the learning potential along with fun value for your child is fantastic. This is a tablet made specifically with learning in mind and targeted completely at a child as opposed to normal tablets which are obviously aimed at adults primarily. The parent lock, parent settings and kid safe browser on the Platinum prevents your little one accessing information they shouldn't with pre-approved content and to me this just feels a lot safer then handing over our Kindle Fire HDX to my son to play with. I would however say that I think this is probably more relevant to younger children as I know my 8 year old nephew for example would think this LeapPad too babyish for him but my 3 year old son loves it and I think it is perfect for him.
Although I bought my son a Leapfrog Leap TV last year when it was released (which he loves), we have never owned one of their LeapPad's (have a Vtech Baby Innotab 2) and I am really impressed with the content and thought that has gone into this. Yes it only comes with a few demo games installed and one free downloadable app (you can choose from three different ones in each age section), but additional games can be purchased and downloaded or cartridges used with it. I spoke to Leap Frog customer services today just to check before I purchased some extra games and they confirmed that their Explorer cartridge games will work with this Platinum edition so if you are upgrading from an older LeapPad and have explorer game cartridges, they can be used with this version and no need to purchase new games. I will update my review to confirm this once the two games I have ordered arrive and I can test the cartridges out on the Platinum.
Although this review is quite long, I have split the review into easy subsections further below so that anyone reading this can determine if they wish to read the full review or just the parts that are of interest to them. I wanted to do a thorough review of the Platinum to help any potential purchasers make an informed decision about whether to purchase this Leap Pad or not and so apologies for the long review.
The LeapFrog LeapPad Platinum comes with the following:-
Leapfrog LeapPad Platinum Learning Tablet (8GB)
1 Stylus attached to the Platinum with a cord to prevent it becoming lost
1 USB cable
1 AC Mains Power Adapter for recharging the rechargeable battery (no more batteries - yeay!)
6 Imagicards including 3 rare Imagicards
1 Free Downloadable App
1 Parent Guide (User Manual)
1 Quick Start Guide
1 year manufacturer warranty
The LeapPad Platinum is aimed at children between the ages of 3 and 9 years old and it does have quite a robust feeling frame to it with a gel surround around the edges but I personally hope that they bring out a gel skin to add to the Platinum as well as although my son is past the throwing things he doesn't want stage from when he was little (Vtech Baby Innotab 2 was thrown) I would still personally feel a bit happier with a separate gel case around it for those accidental drops and falls and especially around my "Destructo Baby" daughter! I think I shall therefore be keeping it out of reach of her and buying the separate carrying case too. The screen is apparently shatterproof but again I would feel safer if they did a gel case too but that's just my personal feeling as the packaging states it's the toughest LeapPad ever.
As I stated above the Platinum tablet is aimed at children between 3 and 9 years old and whilst some of the functions on it are still a bit too old for my son the games and apps are obviously targeted too at specific ages and so I can see this being a tablet that will grow with him and especially because of the vast library of games available to purchase separately. My son is definitely the right age for this tablet now and has shown an interest in it straight away and has been happily playing with this for hours this afternoon on and off and so it is already a big hit in our home. As I stated above I think maybe the upper age limit of 9 may be a bit of wishful thinking on LeapFrog's behalf but this is purely on using my nephew as a guide post for me and as each child is different it will depend on the child, however it is perfect for my son at his current age.
Games / Apps:-
LeapFrog have their own online App centre where you can download games, e-books etc and you get one free download with the Platinum which you can use against three different apps per age stage - we chose Amazing Animals. You do need to set up an account with LeapFrog on their website to purchase apps etc but registration is really simple and I already had an account with them from my children's My Pal Scout and Violet, LeapReader Junior and my son's Leap Band. Your account is password protected to prevent your little one when they get older from just downloading apps and running you up a massive bill without your permission!
The other way to purchase more games is to buy the cartridge versions and as I mentioned above, all of the Explorer games should work with the Platinum so if you have an older LeapPad version the games should still work with the Platinum too.
Thankfully the Platinum has a rechargeable battery so no more running through tons of batteries as you can just re-charge the Platinum up with the included AC Mains Power Adapter. When charging the charge indicator light will light up yellow and when fully charged it will turn green. You do need to charge the Platinum up before first use and it took approximately an hour for ours to charge.
The Platinum has 8GB of memory which will apparently be enough to hold around 100 games at a time and so plenty of space for apps, pictures and games.
The Platinum comes with 19 Apps on it plus your free downloadable app along with 7 other icons to access as follows.....
Personalise - This is where your child can change their picture against their name and change the background on the home screen.
Pet Pad Party- This is where your child can select and look after a pet from a choice of several such as a Dragon or a Monkey. They can name them, personalise them, have them play with other pets and much more. When your child earns tokens (free from playing games) they can use these to buy accessories from the Pet Pad Party store to personalise their home.
Pet Pad Party Token Store - At the top right of the screen this is where your child's earnt tokens from games etc are stored to exchange for things in the store such as flowers, paintings, rainbows, toys etc for your Pet Pad Party home.
Pet Chat - This is where your child and any friend can get their pets to interact with each other providing they both have a Wi-fi LeapPad device. It's sort of like a child's instant messenger and also allows the pets to play and interact together in the Pet Pad.
LeapSearch - This is the child friendly internet where your child can browse the web on pre-approved and selected web sites and has tons of categories to explore such as Cats, Dogs, Arts & Crafts, Science, Ninja, Magic Tricks etc just to name a few.
App Centre - As the name suggests this is where you can download apps straight to the Platinum from LeapFrog's app centre with the parent access code of course.
Sneak Peaks - This has sneak peaks of upcoming apps on LeapFrog and is basically an advertising app.
Music - The Platinum has two albums already installed which each have 5 songs on them such as Old MacDonald, The Scout Song and Dig It.
Imagicard Demo - This is where your child can learn how to use their Imagicard's that came free with the Platinum and has three different activities on there such as taking a photo with a character or watching the figure come alive on the Platinum's screen.
Scout & Friends Game Demo - A really cute this game that explore emotions with Scout and his friends and let your child tell Scout how they are feeling such as Frustrated, Happy, Sad, Excited etc.
Photo Fun Ultra - This is where your child can take pictures and add funny pictures on to them such as a mask, effects etc and then save and view them in the gallery.
Voice Memo - As the name suggests this is where your child can record memo's to themselves - just like Mum and Dad.
Welcome - This is a short intro video explaining what you can do with the Platinum and how to use it and is a really handy little video.
Notepad - A little post it note section where your child can make all those little important notes for themselves.
Camera - As the title suggest this is where your child can take pictures and as the Platinum has a forward and rear facing camera they can switch which way around to take the photos. This is also where the camcorder is and your child can switch between camera and camcorder here.
Gallery - Where your child can store and view their saved photos, videos and drawings.
Cartridge - Where your child can click to play any inserted cartridge.
Awards - The same as the Pet Pad Party Store and shows how many tokens your child has earnt and where they can spend on accessories for their Pet Pads (tokens are free and earnt from playing games).
Settings - Brightness, Volume, Personalise. Parent Settings Access where after entering parent code can change the wireless setup, manage apps, app centre, parent account, child profiles, set play times such as how long can play for and then has to have a rest from Platinum, system updats, system info, change locale, reset lock.
Clock - This announces the time for your child and from here you can change the time on the tablet and use the stopwatch function.
Calculator - Yep a little electronic calculator app.
Calendar - For your little one to store all their important dates of course! Can put birthday's and important dates etc in on the calendar along with a little sticker picture such as a birthday cake, a school bus, a heart, a present or a paw print to name a few. The Platinum announces the date when you first open the app for your child.
The Human Body Game Demo - Where your child can learn about the Human body such as the circulatory system using the little ship to travel around the body. A really good little game but a bit too old for my son at the moment.
Cooking Recipes on the Road Game Demo - Where your child can learn about ingredients and cook meals for the customers of the food wagon. Another really good little game but again a bit too old for my son at the moment.
Stretchy Monkey Game Demo - A Monkey that travels through time in his time machine learning about the past. A brilliant game that my son absolutely loves and is going to end up being a full purchase no doubt once he's worked his way through the demo.
Mr Pencil; The Lost Colours of Doodleburg Demo - A word game which allows your little one to press the individual words and the game sounds them out and highlights the word whilst doing so. A brilliant game for helping your child to read but also a bit old for my son at the moment.
Your Free Download App - We chose Amazing Animals which compares selected animals in a quiz type show and a maze show. A really good animal science game which my son really enjoys.
There is also a battery level indicator at the top right of the screen showing the battery power left before needing to charge and a Wi-fi indicator where you can turn the Wi-fi connection on and off and select the Wi-fi to connect to. The Platinum has a volume control, directional control pad for playing games, home screen button for returning to the home screen, front and rear cameras, stylus and stylus holder, power button, cartridge insert, USB and power cable connection point and headphone jack point.
The Platinum has a 7" touch screen.
It measures approx 23cm long by 15cm wide and approx 2cm deep.
Set-up was really easy which just involved plugging the tablet into a power supply, registering and entering my son's information and connecting my LeapFrog account. There was a little messing with the Wi-fi connection but not too much and the Platinum did want to do a short system update at the beginning also.
A brilliant new tablet from LeapFrog for children, with lots of educational fun apps already installed and 100's more to purchase separately whether by cartridge or download. The Imagicard demo cards included add an extra level of interactive fun to the tablet and allow your child to take pictures with their favourite characters such as Chase from Paw Patrol, play games with the cards or just watch the characters come alive and 'pop out' of the LeapPad screen and I think these are going to be a great feature to the new Platinum. A big thumbs up approval from my son and I and I shall update to confirm re the additional games I have purchased once they arrive and have been tested. I have also attached some pictures which should upload shortly if not already uploaded when you read this.
EDIT 31/07/15:- I can confirm that all of the LeapPad Explorer games work perfectly with the Platinum and so if you are upgrading from an older version LeapPad then you don't have to completely re-buy your game library. My review for Bubble Guppies Explorer Game has some pictures to show the explorer games work on the Platinum.
