Product Description Review

Buy Twist & Shout Multiplication and Twist & Shout Division for the price of one--just £14.99, while stocks last. This pack contains:

Twist & Shout Multiplication:

Twist & Shout Multiplication is a well thought out, portable game for teaching children how to multiply numbers together and (indirectly) introducing them to division. The games develop reasoning skills and give plenty of chances to practice logic and problem solving.

There are three functions to this game: "Learn" mode, which operates on two levels, a completely random and an ordered level; "Quiz" mode, which again operates on two levels, one in which the child chooses two numbers and is given two chances to select the correct answer, and another in which the child is quizzed on a specific times table; and "Thunderbolt" mode, which introduces division by asking the child to fill in the missing number in an equation--for example: "What times four equals eight?"

In all these games Twist and Shout totals the correct number of sums solved and offers congratulations every time five, 10 and 20 questions are correctly answered in a row. An excellent pamphlet for parents and children accompanies the game, and it is easy to follow. The game comes supplied with its own batteries and the only distraction is the American accent, though this is a relatively small point.

According to Michael Wood, LeapFrog president: "Presented as a game, learning the times tables can be engaging--even a blast. Through fun learning we think your child will discover that mathematics is an exciting, satisfying and creative pursuit."

Based on educationally sound principles, this is a fantastic aid to multiplication that really does help to make maths fun. Recommended for ages seven upwards.

Twist & Shout Division:

Twist & Shout Division is another excellent learning aid from LeapFrog, designed specifically to enable children to learn division tables, 1-12, in a fun way that also encourages success. Logic and problem solving--important mathematical and life skills--can also be practised.

It is widely accepted that learning maths equations and numbers most easily comes about when they are presented in order, one number set at a time. Twist & Shout Division uses this learning process and also adds catchy music to reinforce the message, hopefully aiding memorisation and increasing the fun. There are four game modes--"Math Master", "Quiz Time", "Super Solver" and "Time Bender"--all of which demand full interaction as young mathematicians attempt to solve the various equations.

A volume control is included on the learning aid, including low, medium and high. There is also the option to use headphones (not included) for quiet learning play. An in-built safety device automatically switches Twist & Shout off after 18 seconds if it hasn't been used. Accompanying the learning aid is an excellent pamphlet explaining all aspects of the games, and this should be read before beginning, especially the section related to the use and removal of batteries. As this game is produced in the USA, certain pronunciations are Americanised. However, this in no way detracts from the enjoyment and learning potential as this is another excellent game from LeapFrog that will provide hours of fun and stimulation. Though adults also might learn from playing the games, it is recommended for ages seven years and older. Twist & Shout Multiplication also makes a great learning aid for Key Stage Two maths students. --Susan Naylor
