Product description

Review

Occasionally one comes across an idea or theory that changes one s heart and mind. With his theory on leadership Etsko Schuitema achieved this with several prominent leaders in the FirstRand Group. Etsko asked a fundamental question that led to a paradigm shift in one of the FirstRand companies. He asked, Do you use your people to get results, or do you use results and the work environment to enable you to care for and grow your people? This question made us realise that we could be using our people merely as a means to an end. This realisation confronts one with ones own worldview. Ones view of the world determines ones intent and consequently ones attention, which manifests itself in all relationships. The scary part is that we are not always aware of our own worldview and how it affects our relationships. With this philosophy, Etsko helped us at FirstRand to understand the difference between being in the world to get, to give in order to get, or to give unconditionally. This new insight into benevolence in social systems and the bottom line of a company had a great impact on our organisation. The understanding of his views on the legitimacy of power in a relationship is crucial for any leader. I have witnessed the impact on a financial services group, but I can imagine the difference it could make in the sporting arena. Think of a future with coaches embracing this philosophy! The power of his theory lies in its authenticity. This is not just an-other guideline or inspirational book it speaks to the fundamental value system of a leader. I support Volker Hooybergs view on one of Etskos earlier editions: The insights that he so ably articulates in this book are fresh, basic and consistently helpful to all those who reflect on what they can do for others . Francois Hugo, HR Director, FNB. A wake up call for managers who would strive to be leaders. Etsko Schuitema transforms the words power and empowerment into living, breathing ways of human interaction. Authentic leaders earn respect of others, rather than demanding it. This book illustrates the authentic, timeless Care and Growth Model. - Dr. Denis Waitley, author The Seeds of Greatness --Publisher

About the Author

Etsko Schuitema completed an honours degree in Social Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1980 and was subsequently employed by the Human Resources Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa. These were times of upheaval in South Africa, and his work was initially focused on the issue of conflict in gold mines at the final eclipse of the overthrow of the apartheid regime. Due to his position, he was right in the middle of the conflict that swept through the mines. His groundbreaking work dealing with conflict resolution noted, specifically his development of a framework for understanding and trust in this controversial industry. In the late 1980s Etsko was appointed head of the Human Resources Laboratory Industry Project. His main focus was the implementation of insights from his basic research. This lead to the development of Etskos Care and Growth Leadership Model. The application of this insightful model became a successful system that has been tested in a variety of disparate industries such as manufacturing, IT, hospitality, financial services and agriculture, in a total of 15 countries on 4 continents.
