Re-live the old days. Pop this one in the player, turn it up to eleven, strip down to your y-fronts and wrestle your dad on the living room floor. This CD kicks arse.
Six tracks which are all covers versions of Hardcore, Grindcore, thrash and Death Metal bands from the early to mid eighties.
Every track is a winner. Personal favourites are Back from the dead by Death, and Nazi punks fuck off by Dead Kennedys.
Basically, unless you're stupid or have just suffered a terrible bereavement get this now.

This CD is an excellent filler, and gives an ideal insight into the band members lives as tape-traders. I'm not usually a hardcore fan, but Politicians and Nazi Punks are both excellent here. The track by Slaughter showcases how funny they were, and how innovative they were at the same time. The Pentagram track makes you wonder why you can't find an album by them anywhere, it's so good. Personally I'm a big fan of Death's and this shows the band in their formative stages, with an excellently done song again, simple but effective. I love Repulsion too, and Maggots In Your Coffin is as good a cover as Horrified was, when done by Mortician, but you can actually hear it this time!
Overall a good chance to hear what Napalm like, and how good they are at covers...

this is an awesome album made by a supreme and bloody noisy band. death metal is definately the type of music you listen to when you are angry and want to smash stuff up. don't buy this if you are faint hearted. my favourite songs on this album are "politicians" and "back from the dead"

5.0 out of 5 stars Napalm Death proves why they are leaders not followers 22 April 2002
By Sean - Published on Amazon.com

Covers. Cover songs can be a double-edged sword. They can either write you off as a "cover band" and be forever to re-digest music for hits and make you an extra buck(see Metallica). OR they can not only improve your musical ability, but as well as show your musical doctrines and influences. Napalm Death just does that. For almost 20 years now, Napalm Death have been one of leaders in Extreme Music. But Napalm Death have always had their share of influences such as Raw Power(UK), Slaughter(Canada), Pentagram(Chile), Repulsion (US), Death and Dead Kennedys. What significant about these influences is that they are pretty wide range from Grindcore, Death Metal, Thrash/Speed Metal, to Punk and Hardcore. The thing I really like most instead of picked the more known bands of today, they picked out some of the best from the old Metal tape-trading circuit of the mid to late 80's. Not only am I fan of these cover songs, but as well as the original bands themselves and have forked over a LOT of money to find the origin of the songs Napalm Death covers. Best songs: Incinerator(Slaughter), Demonic Possession(Pentagram), Maggots In Your Coffin(Repulsion), and Back From The Dead(Death). Great cd, really good price, well worth your money too!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Masters of the EP 20 Feb. 2011
By J. Hill - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I rarely think EP's deserve five stars, but Napalm Death knows how to do it. They have a proven track record of solid EP's, from 1989's Mentally Murdered to 1997's Breed to Breathe. Leaders Not Followers continues that tradition in stellar fashion. While many bands release EP's consisting of B-side material or a handful of live tracks, Napalm offers six cover songs that showcase their musical influences on one hand and their unrivaled intensity on the other. They fly through these tracks in just under twenty minutes, crushing your ears throughout. Three of these covers show up on their subsequent Punishment in Capitals live album; Politicians, a blistering hardcore song by Raw Power; Back From the Dead, a demo-era song from Death; and the Napalm staple Nazi Punks **** Off by Dead Kennedys (re-recorded from the previous Napalm EP of the same name).

Barney sounds crisp, clear, and vicious, and the band shows hints of turning back to a heavier direction from the Fear Emptiness Despair-through-Words From the Exit Wound albums. That's exactly what they would do on the next cd, Enemy of the Music Business, but as of this EP, released in 1999, they hadn't yet made that grindcore comeback. After this foray into cover songs, they released a second, full-length installment of covers in 2004. This first one can be picked up for under five bucks brand new, which I think makes it entirely worth it for a fan of the band. The songs retain the flavor of the originals, but they still sound unmistakably like Napalm Death, and they put their usual 100% effort into the recordings. Intense band, powerful EP; highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great mini-album 9 Aug. 2013
By A. Stutheit - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
"Leaders Not Followers" retains the true Napalm Death attribute in that it might be a mini-album, but it sure cuts deep. In fact, this white-hot E.P. might be only nineteen minutes in length, but it sure makes the most out of every second, with walloping, grinding blasts, simple, brutal guitar parts, amelodic vocals, and punk-y, grumbling bass liens occupying every last moment of it. Paying homage to Napalm's influences, this scathing set of covers touches on everyone from Dead Kennedys to Repulsion. (And some Raw Power, Slaughter, Pentagram, and Death covers are included, as well.) Opener "Politicians" possesses a very punk-y sounding feel, despite its prevalence of high/low growl-`n'-scream/shriek vocals and tight, slamming thrash beats. This punk influence mainly comes in the form of the track's chorus, which is a catchy call-and-response refrain. It flows directly into "Incinerator," which begins with a creepy little, guitar feedback-laden intro followed by a catchy, hardcore-derived gang shout, fiery, chugging riffs, and blistering, dive-bombing mini-solo. "Demoniac Possession" is an even catchier song, though, as it boasts a rhythmic, galloping rhythm laid alongside an abundance of scalding riffage and smashing, thundering drum blasts. "Maggots In Your Coffin," then, is mainly centered around more earth-scorching guitar picking and furious, hyper-kinetic trapkit battery, although it does briefly delve into thrash territory with a blistering bit of unorthodox, chaotic, and whammy-bar-soaked soloing. Moving on down the line, "Back From The Dead" alternates between two styles: Chugging thrash and furious, pummeling grindcore (with 1-2-3, 1-2-3, grinding blasts and dirty, washed-out-sounding bass fills). And finally, the short-player concludes with "Nazi Punks F Off," which also retains a very punk-like vibe throughout, which is mainly thanks to a grungy-sounding guitar/bass intro. But with that said, Barney's furious, trademarked death metal bellowing and Danny Herrera's pummeling blast beats dominate most of the song's maelstrom. At the end of the day, "Leaders Not Followers" cannot be said to be an absolutely essential purchase, but it is good and entertaining enough to be worth checking out if you are a lifelong Napalm Death follower.

5.0 out of 5 stars Obscure songs from a staple of Grindcore 9 Aug. 2006
By A. Loscavio - Published on Amazon.com

So you've got every other Napalm Death release ever and are getting a little depressed about hearing "Suffer The Children" over and over ( not that it's a terrible thing ). This release is by far my favorite given it's range of styles for the band, and even the genres covered. The only downer is that you are limited in sheer number of tracks, which leaves you fiending for more. All in all, not your run-of-the-mill ND release, but with brutality and typical thrash fashion

Once again the grindcore god fathers do it again with this album. I enjoy Incinerator song the most of this album.
