Product Description

Product Description

Jennifer Knapp's KANSAS won well-deserved accolades within contemporary Christian music circles and established the Midwest singer as a newborn rock gospel star -- in fact, she won the 1998 Dove Award for Best New Artist. Two years later, Knapp follows her debut with 2000's gutsy, graceful LAY IT DOWN and proves she's no flash in the pan. Knapp's Midwest folk rock echoes the Indigo Girls' earthy clarity and even touches on Sheryl Crow's white blues rock n' roar. But never mind comparisons, Knapp's most distinguishing mark is that too-rare skin-tingling timbre that surfaces when singers belt straight from the most passionate depths. Knapp hits those vocal highs on songs like the wispy acoustic "Usher Me Down" and the traditional riff rock of the title track, while her uncompromised, joyous faith shines through deeply personal and confessional lyrics. Perhaps aiming at well-deserved crossover appeal, Knapp never sounds overzealously evangelical or self-righteous; and on the sweeping, strings-layered opening track, "A Little More," she acknowledges that "with all this motivation I still find a hesitation deep in my soul." Other highlights include the warm acoustic groove of "All Consuming Fire" and Knapp's inspired rendition of the mandolin-laden "Diamond in the Rough." Dealing with the universal theme of personal salvation, LAY IT DOWN is Knapp's testimony, presented not as a guideline for grasping souls, but as an intimate travelogue of her own spiritual journey. Music fans of all stripes -- not just CCM enthusiasts -- take note.

Review

Lay It Down raises the bar artistically over her well-received 1997 Gotee debut, Kansas, while maintaining a vital connection to what worked for her the first time.

Sonically, Knapp's influences suggest some of the strongest female singer/songwriters-the rock vitality of Melissa Etheridge, the robust vocal style of Sheryl Crow and the down-home mandolin folk of Indigo Girls.

Lay It Down suggests a rise in confidence in her abilities as a singer/songwriter. From images of sin as a "rock in my pocket" to the graceful "handprint of God on the small of my back," Knapp describes on the title track in a meaningful way.

But as in any emerging state, there is awkwardness.

On "Usher Me Down" I miss the honest, earthy poetic language that would otherwise communicate to the un-churched person what she means by a line like "My Wall, my Mighty Tower, be my Shadow come over me 'till all my enemies cower jealous of my King" on "You Remain."

Short of Knapp asking, "Does nothing satisfy you?" Lay It Down suggests that Jennifer Knapp is striving to find those important connections; This is a strong step toward the truly great album we know she has in her.-Brian Q. Newcomb --

Having been left uninspired by some of the Christian music i've heard (I often think its worthy but not great music) this CD was a fantastic surprise. Great songs with powerful but accessible lyrics all passionately delivered. Can't decide on a favourite track, too many good ones - but I think at least 3 of them would be mainstream radio hits if we lived in a sane world! I played it to a group of people in the car and they couldn't agree what genre it was (folk/pop/rock etc) which I always think is a good sign - though inclusion of a Shawn Colvin song is a pretty good indicator of the style. To me this is what praising God should sound like - exuberant but reverential and thoughtful but still full of feeling. Christian music with an edge. To quote one of my car passengers "this is quite cool for that kind of music"!

This album is for someone who likes raw-sounding, earthy music. I didn't like it that much, because I like more smooth sounding music, but some of the songs are nice. A few are very worshipful, but not the kind of things I usually like to listen to. Number 8, Diamond in the Rough, is really awesome though. Probably my favorite one on the disk. If you like peaceful, quiet music, or something smooth sounding, I wouldn't reccomend this CD.

I disagree, I think Lay it Down is fantastic, with it's only donside being only half an hour long, admittidly there are a couple of weak tracks but Peace and Answer me more than make up for it, if you're a real Knapp fan, go get it, and you'll be glad you did.
