Format: Audio CD
This is a richly melodic collection of early music, but in addition to the usual viols and lutes, it also features theorbos (like a cross between a lute and giant guitar), and organ. This consequently gives a greater richness and variety to these dance-like pieces, which vary from rustic earthiness to courtly elegance, or the yearning pavan. These are warmly immediate pieces, full of joyful rhythmns, underpinned by the rich variety of the writing, and the quality of the performances. An essential collection of early music, and a perfect introduction for a beginner to this neglected and rewarding world.

Not only is this a very fine selection of William Lawes's consort music, the performances too are of a consistent high standard. The Rose Consort of Viols, with substantial help from Timothy Roberts, Jacob Heringman and David Miller, highlight the intricate quality of this remarkable seventeenth-century consort music. Both David Miller and Jacob Heringman shine with their brilliant contribution on theorbos and lutes. John Taylor's sound-engineering steps up to the mark, with well balanced equalization and ideal spatial definition. Somehow, this just seems too good to be true!

Sumptuous, richly rewarding. Filled with variety, this is a treasure trove. I'd never before heard of William Lawes, but trust the Naxos early music series, so thought I'd try this. Thrilled with this CD and its stunningly various sounds.

I enjoy this era of music, which has mainly been Julian Bream lute music. These Lawes composition's are thus a welcome expansion. The pieces offer the listener both reflection and action.
