Also, compared to most coffee available in the UK which is packed in 227g (1/2 lb), Lavazza is packed in 250g (The worst offender is the new 'rebranded' Douwe Egberts - part of their rebrand is to reduce the packs to 200g!)
(I usually stock up in Tesco when the double packs are on offer in Tesco for about £4!)
Even Waitrose sell it for about £3.25 (which is still dear).
If you can get to an IKEA buy their Espresso blend, just as good and only £1.75 a packet.
It does last reasonably long when used in a coffee machine and offers an excellent quality for a reasonable price.
So enough of that, my review of this Lavazza.
Firstly you get a wonderful aroma when you first open, with a bit of a bite, guess that's the robusta content (more of that in a moment). The grind is a bit fine to say the least, so careful with your measuring.
I tend to use a cafetière , I've been told this is incredible in a pump pressure machine but have yet to try this.
It produces minor crema (very hit and miss in a cafetiere anyway so that's no biggie).
The taste.....lovely and smooth but with a bit of a bite (very minor). Now this is an arabica robusta blend. Briefly if you're not sure what this means, well the two most widely available coffee beans are arabica and robusta. Arabica is delicate, must be grown at altitude and has an extremely complex taste. It's regarded as the most desirable. Robusta can be grown in worse climates, isn't as delicate, and tastes "rough" to many, it's by far the cheaper option and is extensively grown in Asia. It has a bigger kick and produces a heavy crema thus is used in many blends.
Now the manufacturers will describe robusta as having chocolate and smoky tones....it kind of does....but the easier and much more accurate description to coffee fans is "hot rubber tyre". This isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Point of this is, first sip of Lavazza and i immediately think of the bicycle selling area of Halfords.Read more ›
