HASH(0x93d3a27c) out of 5 stars Second Of A Three-Volume Series Covering Laurie Records 27 Aug. 2007
By AvidOldiesCollector - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
When it comes to CD compilations covering Golden Oldies music, with cleaned-up sound and copious, fact-filled and interesting liner notes, complete with vintage photographs and reproductions as well as discographies, at the top of the list is Ace Records of the U.K. Without a doubt. Their overall catalogue is massive, and in this 3-volume series they provide 79 sides by artists who were recorded by Laurie Records, a New York City-based label launched in 1958 by brothers Robert and Gene Schwartz and Allan I. Sussel, and their subsidiaries (or those with whom they had a distribution arrangement) - Audicon, Andie/Rust, LeGrand.

Many of the sides presented may not have become nationally-charting singles in the U.S. but that does not take away from the fact most, if not all, are highly sought after by those collectors who focus on things like Doo-Wop and the Girl-Group Sound. It also has to be kept in mind that those which emerged in 1964/65 had to face the British Invasion led by The Beatles and Rolling Stones who collectively shoved aside all but the very best - and most heavily promoted - North American artists when it came to the upper regions of the lucrative Billboard Pop Top/Hot 100. Some were also legitimate One-Hit Wonders (i.e., only one nationally-charting song) and these are indicated by an asterisk (*) below, while others, such as Carlo and The Brooklyn Boys, never even enjoyed that status.

The tracks in this Volume 2 and their details are:
1. The Good Life - *Ernie Maresca - Laurie 3345 - did not chart in 1966;
2. Brenda The Great Pretender - Carlo - never previously released;
