Product Description

More mayhem from Laurel and Hardy with prison as its theme. In 'Pardon Us', Stan and Laurel are sent to prison for breaking Prohibition laws (both the restored and extended black and white version and an extended colour version are included). In 'The Hoose Gow' things get messy with a rice pudding fight, started when they join a prison road gang. Also included is the well-known silent short 'The Battle of the Century', which served as the inspiration for the rice-pudding scene.

Ok.. this is an ok L&H feature.. quite amusing but I found that the padding out of the film with the restored sequences did little for the movie although important from a historical viewpoint.. why didn't they put the original 55 minute version on the disc as well??

In reply to the other reviwer.. Have you seen BLOCK-HEADS?? This is a comedy masterwork and far far better than Pardon Us!!

Pardon us 1930 is the first laurel and hardy feature length film they did it isnt brill but its the only one where there in bars as this gives them the plesure to do their comedy on screen hardy sings one of his besf songs as it was humourous aswell and stan does some great stuff as the dance , the dentist gag and the gun gag aswell , for a start of their feature length it cojld of been worse walter long is in his se ond best role here and the film is entertaining my only hate with this is that the scene where the two rescue the woman from the burning building is a bit dated special effects wise but the main thing here is that the scene with the black people seems to be offensive and shows how segergrated they were during the 30s not everything back then was fair . The hoose gow 1929 is an eary sound sound in which is iconic for a rice pudding fight also iconic gags including chopping the haurds tree down and once again james finlayson being the target , the hoose gow is one of the best and has the classic thing a out it .The batte of the century is from 1927 a silent which i would of liked to have seen the original print the silent seemed to have lost a scene during the years and is the best pie fight from classic comedy on screen unfortanataly this and another lost film hatts off 1927 is unknown to have survived , hats off probably is their best silent but for some strange reason is lost bit how can a film get lost and someome should know where it is only thought i have is that its in hal roach studios but yeah hatt of was remade as the music box 1932 and filmed on the same area with similair stories .

This was Laurel & Hardy's first foray into longer comedies - released in 1930. Unfortunately, it wasn't much of a success as this was one of their poorest films. It wasn't well received during previews and had to be re-written and held back for some time while it was re-filmed. I'm not exactly sure which version is on the DVD but it's clearly not one of their many classics.

As the comedy pair's first release it has an historic importance and interest to their fans but don't expect too much from this particular outing.

After seeing these as a child, I thought it would be great to treat my own kids to some "REAL" comedy. Needless to say, they have fallen about laughing and can't get enough of Laurel & Hardy. Slapstick comedy at its best :-)

Laurel and Hardy were always best when they combined a series of ever-changing scenarios and built them up into a feature film.

This plot gives them the opportunity to do just that: they quickly go from courtroom to prison to escapees and milk each comic situation for all its worth.

I would buy this again just to hear Laurel turn to the judge in court ask him of the accused: "Aren't you gonna hang him?"
