Where do Soap Nuts Come From
The up to 15m high Soap Nut trees grow mainly in South India. In March and April, the tree is adorned with white flowers, and the ripe Soap Nuts are harvested in October. When removed from the tree the soapnuts are sticky and golden in colour. They are dried and their colour becomes reddish-brown. The nuts are then cracked and the black kernel, which can neither be eaten nor used for washing is removed and the shells, which contain saponin (a natural detergent), are packed up in cotton bags.
How do Soap Nuts work?
The somewhat sticky saponin in the shells of the soap nuts acts in a similar way to normal soap. Once the shells get in contact with water, this natural saponin soap is released and creates mild suds. Place 4 to 5 half shells in one of the provided cotton bags. Tie the bag and place it with your laundry in the washing machine. Start your machine as usual, with or without pre-wash. The remains of the Soap Nuts can be composted or disposed of through organic refuse.
How to Use
No need for fabric softeners. Also kind to delicate fabrics such as silk and wool. When washing in cold to warm water, Soap Nuts can be used multiple times. In the case of heavy stains, we recommend adding one tablespoon of stain remover. For a fragrant wash add your favourite essential oils.
30° to 40° 5 - 7 half shells / 60° to 95° 3 - 5 half shells
Up to 240 washes from a 1kg bag.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 December 2015This is my first time using soap nuts as an alternative to the more traditional laundry detergents. I had heard about them, but I have to be honest and say when I saw them I was not sure they would work. They look so different to anything I have used to do my laundry and so I didn’t know what to expect.
These soap nuts came well presented in a large muslin bag and there are three smaller muslin bags that you use to put the soap nuts in when doing the laundry. The bag contains 1kg of soap nuts and as I live in a hard water area, I use between 6 and 8 half nut shells – these weigh under 10g for each wash, so as you can see there are plenty of washes to be had out of this 1kg bag.
A few tips:
• I always tie a secure knot on the muslin bag once the soap nuts are in to prevent them from slipping out of the bag.
• I don’t ever throw them away after a single wash. I tend to use the same lot of soap nuts up to 4 times. If you want to check if they are still working, just run the muslin bag with the soap nuts in under the tap and squeeze. If foam is still coming out of the muslin bag, then they can still be used for another wash.
• I add a few drops of essential oil to my dispenser drawer – I use either lavender or sweet orange oil instead of fabric softener and this makes the laundry smell wonderful.
I have to say I have been really impressed with these soap nuts and I will continue to use them. They wash the laundry well without damaging the fibres of the clothes, so whereas the commercial detergents I have used tend to make our clothes fade, these keep them in good condition.
This bag has already lasted me a couple of months and I do laundry every day. As I use them multiple times I use roughly 20g of soap nuts a week. I have already had them for a couple of months and I haven’t even used a quarter of the bag yet, so they really are extremely good value for money. They are environmentally friendly and don’t have all the chemicals that can sometimes cause skin irritations, so they are great for washing babies clothes or for those with sensitive skin. I am definitely a fan of the soap nut and these soap nuts from Salveo are great.
Thank you for taking the time to read this review.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2015Soap nuts are what they are. Natural nuts, that contain a small amount of saponins (soap). It's enough to wash your clothes to a hygenic level, but you need to understand the basics of getting clothes clean to appreciate them. The act of mechanical movement i.e. in a washing machine, combined with warm water does most of the work of removing the dirt from the garments. Saponins (soap) just break up the surface tension between the water and the dirt, allowing the mechanical movement to more easily remove it. That applies to all washing soaps/liquids. Modern day detergents are better at removing dirt to a point because of all the additives, but pre-treatment of stains is the key in any case. As a student I used to use Persil etc and never get stains out of my clothes and could never figure out why my mum was able. Because she spent hours every week pretreating my stains! So with pretreatment, which often (not always) involves soaking and scrubbing a stain with normal soap as soon as it occurs, these soap nuts bring out clean clothes. I add lavender oil to the dispenser if I want a slight fragrance, and occasionally white distilled vinegar as a softener. My t-towels, have some stains that I live with, the soapnuts don't produce a foam, and my clothes don't wreak of fragrance, but they are clean visually and hygienically. But there genuinely are saponins in the nuts. It's a price I'm willing to pay for a cheap, natural and more importantly simple product. You pop 3 or 4 in a tied up sock and throw in with the washing. My dad now uses them, not because they are natural, but because they're so simple. After a few washes you simply compost them. The only downside is they are shipped from India, but all things considered, shipping masses of these on cargo ships is a drop in the ocean compared to all the other resources we consume in our day to day lives, and must surely use far less oil than the petrochemical based detergents that most householders use.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 November 2024This is an amazing product. The clothes are clean no need for fab softener so is very cheap to use, good for the planet. The only disadvantage is they are all stuck together and needed a good bashing to separate into small lumps.

WendyReviewed in the United States on 30 July 20185.0 out of 5 stars Do not hesitate to buy these
Hubby and I share the laundry duty and we have fallen in love with these soap nuts. We were looking for eco friendly, cost effective, ways to clean our clothes that was still ok for our daughter with eczema. These are a perfect fit! I was concerned that my clothes would have an unpleasant smell but they smell pleasant without having an smell. Weird but true!
I HATE plastic and I love this for the no plastic alone!
We put 5 in one of the little bags and use it 7 times, then we add 5 more, without throwing away the older soap nuts. The price on these was great and that is why we chose this brand.

tinkerbellReviewed in France on 20 July 20195.0 out of 5 stars Écologique et économique

silviaReviewed in Italy on 23 January 20195.0 out of 5 stars OTTIME NOCI INDIANE NATURALI
Tipiche noci indiane, molto forti e naturali. Consegna veloce imballo sigillato ottimo.

M. PaulaReviewed in Spain on 27 September 20185.0 out of 5 stars impresionante !

elReviewed in Germany on 5 October 20135.0 out of 5 stars Besser als erwartete Waschergebnisse
Weißes sollte man also immer mal wieder mit normalen Waschmittel waschen.
