Review

Latin Prep is the best Latin program for my family. The humour is perfect. The grammar is just enough. The exercises can be silly which makes it fun for the children and takes away the mundane of other programs. I cannot recommend Latin Prep enough. --Patricia Tobar-Jackson, Home Schooler, USA; I'm using Latin Prep Book I with my two boys, ages 10 & 12, and we're loving it. We've used other programs before this, but Latin Prep is the most fun while also the most rigorous of the Latin series we've tried. I had six years of Latin in junior and high school, and am so excited to re-learn it with my kids. --Laura, Home Schooler; What prep schools have been waiting for! This is an introduction to Latin embracing the tried and trusted rigour of Wilding - and all carefully tailored for today's child and today's Common Entrance syllabus. --James Piper, The Dragon School, Oxford

Theo Zinn under the auspices of Nick Oulton at Galore Park breathes new life into prep school Latin with this purpose-written course. Language work is introduced in a quirky and child-friendly way, while regaining much of the rigour laid aside by other recently produced textbooks. The emphasis is on learning through practice, with every new topic tested via Latin-to-English and English-to-Latin translation. In addition, each chapter ends with a vocabulary list of 20 from the list of 200 words prescribed for the revised Common Entrance syllabus, so removing the need for 'selective' revision at the end of the day. A very welcome book.

Although this book isn't quite of the same quality and depth as L. A. Wilding's Latin Course for Schools, this is better than the other more modern textbooks. The Oxford and Cambridge courses are both dreary and the other Galore Park ISEB textbook is disastrous: it introduces FOUR tenses in Chapter 1! If you are looking to help a 13 year old boy with his Common Entrance this is the one for you. It introduces themes in a sane order, only uses syllabus words, and each book corresponds to a Level on the ISEB curriculum. If you are older and are looking for help brushing up your own Latin, I would go with one of the older ones, such as Wilding, or perhaps Reading Latin, because it has quite an interesting way of presenting information, especially if you are refreshing a schoolboy knowledge.

This book (series) does what it says on the tin, and does it well. There are some boring Latin books still around - this is not one of them. I used the series very successfully with year 4-6 pupils as part of their preparation for Common Entrance. Would recommend without any reservations.

Previous reviews have said it all, really. I've taught the more advanced books (SYRWTL Latin 1 etc), which are great but quite heavy-going, as you would expect with CE on the horizon, but this is so much easier. Ideal for younger children (teaching able 7yo; 11yos would be happy with it); very English humour; funny illustrations. The workbooks are very useful as they painlessly provide more practice in the basics as needed. This is good practice at its best - the rigorous yet humorous Latin teacher you always wished you'd had.

Brilliant intro to Latin. highly recommend it. My 11 year old is teaching himself with it!! Only thing is there are minimal exercises to practise so now going to buy the exercise book that goes with it, so my son can reinforce his learning.

Excellent book to help beginners and support those who have already started and need a little support to fill those gaps. I originally bought this for my daughter who started to lean Latin at high school. Nobody in our family had any previous knowledge, so this was an excellent first book to help her.
