George Strait is a legend in Country Music but even diehard fans were beginning to wonder if he'd lost his midas touch, in fact in the early 1990's he was beginning to look and sound like his trademark old hat. 'Blue Clear Sky' saw a return to form and this compilation includes tracks from studio albums Lead On (1994), Blue Clear Sky (1996), Carrying Your Love With Me (1997) and One Step At A Time (1998) - two of which won the album of the year award at the prestiguous Country Music Association (CMA) Awards.
The album's new tracks 'The Best Day' went to #1 in the Billboard Country Chart and 'Murder on Music Row' won a CMA award. The latter cut was a tongue in cheek sideswipe at the record industry with the killer line 'someone killed country music, ripped out its heart and soul, they committed murder down on music row'.
Get 'Carried Away' by the stories of stubborn old cowboys and love grown cold (in 'I Can Still Make Cheyenne', 'Round About Way'). Relive those inspirational anthems on never giving up for example 'True' and 'One Night At A Time' and being in love such as ('Adalida', 'We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This'). By buying this album for a country (& WESTERN) type music fan you can be sure they will have a 'Best Day'. Magic.

As a relatively recent George Strait fan I only have a few albums from his enormous back catalogue, so this CD was a perfect opportunity for me to check out some of his latest, greatest hits! Strait has been producing top quality country music for the last two decades and has has unrivaled success. This album makes it easy to see why, and is the perfect taster for someone who has only recently discovered George Strait or country music in general. There are too many great songs to meantion, but my personal favourites have to be 'Murder on Music Row' (the award winning duet with Alan Jackson which took Nashville by storm with it's criticism of the 'dumbing down' of country music), 'Blue Clear Sky' and 'I Can Still Make Cheyenne'. Buy this album, you won't regret it!

I am a die hard George Strait fan. If you have never heard of him, you don't know what you're missing! I found his music quite by chance after watching the CMA Awards and buying the album of the show. His track at the time was Write This Down and it was enough to make me want to try one of his albums. I have since bought ALL of his back catalogue, because he never seems to have a bad album. This one that I'm reviewing now is one of the best you could start off with if you're not too familiar with his music. If you enjoy music by artists such as Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and Aaron Tippin, you will not be disappointed with this one. Buy this album if only for the tracks The Best Day, Adalida and Murder On Music Row. You won't regret it!!!

This is George Strait greatest hits and he delivers. I came across George by accident but have been a fan ever since. This is an album for those just discovering country from toe tapping dance songs to ballards - made their own by Mr Strait - an excellent album

The album picks up George's career where the boxed set (Strait out of the box) ends, so it covers the period from 1994 to 1998. It shows that George's style was evolving but still firmly rooted in traditional country music.
The album opens with two songs specially recorded for the album, the first (The best day) being an excellent ballad. The second song (Murder on music row) was first written and recorded by Larry Cordle, a bluegrass performer. Here, George sings it as a duet with Alan Jackson. George rarely sings duets but although there is no obvious reason for this particular song to be a duet, George and Alan clearly enjoyed recording this song. While both George and Alan have made some concessions to the requirements of the contemporary market place, they have both managed to be hugely successful with music that is much closer to traditional country music than most of the music recorded in Nashville these days.
The remaining tracks are taken from just four albums, these being Lead on (Adalida, Lead on, You can't make a heart love somebody), Blue clear sky (the title track, Carried away, I can still make it to Cheyenne, King of the mountain), Carrying your love with me (the title track, Round about way, One night at a time, Today my word slipped away) and One step at a time (True, We really shouldn't be doing this). Of these songs, Today my world slipped away is a cover of a Vern Gosdin country hit but the others (as far as I know) are original songs.
Picking out highlights in such a strong collection is difficult, but I'll nominate Murder on Music Row, Adalida, Blue clear sky and King of the mountain. If you are new to George's music, this compilation makes a great introduction.

If you're looking for some quality music - you've found it! And if you haven't heard of George Strait, this is a terrific starter. The guy is The King of Country and, with 56 chart-toppers, has had more Number 1s than anybody else - more than Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, you name 'em. This set predominantly features the hits between 1994 and 2000; in other words, his "Lead On" album until just after "Always Never the Same". This was an interesting recording era for Strait, as he relied more than ever on mid-tempo crowd pleasers as epitomised by "Check Yes Or No", and, on this collection, "Carrying Your Love With Me", and also achieved one of many career highlights, with the 1996 album "Blue Clear Sky", which fans and critics alike herald as one of his most striking masterpieces. This was also one of four consecutive Number 1 albums - no mean feat, but a little less than a walk in the park for Nashville's Favourite. As this is a greatest hits package, it's wall-papered with excellent musicianship, wistful arrangements, well-written songs by the toast of Tennessee - and most importantly, "that" voice; a relaxed, laid back drawl, complemented with the occasional catch in the throat when the song reaches its emotional zenith. And as the torch-bearer for Country music, there could be no other finer example of his talent than the Number 1s "You Can't Make a Heart Love Someone" and "The Best Day". Since this compilation hit the market, King George - as he is referred to by one and all - has delivered another 20 hit singles and six consecutive Number 1 albums in the last eight years alone.
