I first saw this when I was about 5 and loved it! I used to drive relatives loopy watching it but I adore the story, it has everything that makes a good fairy tale; a scary villan, magic spells and of course fantasy creatures like the unicorn. I recently bought it on DVD and watching it again (as a grown up!) you pick up on lots of little things you never would've noticed when you were wee! It looks a bit dated now of course, the animation styles and things are very 80s, but to me that's half the charm of something enjoyed when small and still enjoyable now!

Having seen the film as a child, when I saw this for sale on DVD I just had to buy it. The story is of a female Unicorn (Mia Farrow), who, on hearing from some huntsmen that she is the last Unicorn, sets out to find others of her kind. On the way she meets a variety of colourful characters, including Schmendrick the Magician and Molly Grue. The story takes a sinister twist with the appearence of the Red Bull who drove all the other Unicorns into the sea. It is a magical tale with beautiful animation which will capture the hearts of both children and adults alike.

I can't find the words to describe how beautiful this film is. I loved it as a child, and now that I've grown up (a bit...!), I love it even more! The other reviewers have told you about the amazing actors who gave their voices to the characters, so I'll tell you about what this film makes you feel. Magical. Children love it for the unpredictable story and lovable characters, and adults love it for the truths and irony, the humanity and heart-wrenching beauty of pure and impossible love. My sister and I still quote the film and act out the dialogues...all i can say is, if you don't like this movie, there's just something wrong! The music is amazing and the animation is similar to Anime, no modern-computer stuff, which I believe is perfect, adding to the beauty of the film. No matter how old you are, whether you have children or not, or how old they might be, BUY THIS FILM! I know if someone told me to buy it, I'd thank them heartily, The Last Unicorn has given me so much. Thank you to Peter S. Beagle for writing the book (AND screenplay! hooray!) and to the geniuses who finally put it on DVD!

This is probably the greatest animated fantasy film EVER. If you are consisdering buying this film its the best bloody idea you've ever had. I would advise you to read the book first though, it gives another element to the film. I first saw this film when I was about 8, and I have loved it ever since. It is one of those films that appeals to the young and the old, the story is timeless, and the actors involved really help to bring it to life. Mia Farrow plays the voice of the unicorn, and Lady Amalthea, Christopher Lee also stars, along with Amanda Lansbury(Bedknobs and Broomsticks). A full action movie is actually in the making, with Christopher Lee actually playing the part of King Haggard, and Angela L playing the role of Mommy Fortuna, as she did in the animation.
I really do recomend you buying this film, the music is brilliant with a few tracks by the band America, but if you want a film to transport you into a fantasy world and make you feel about 5 again, this is it.

I had a copy of this video when my children were small, lent it out and never saw it again. I am definitely buying another copy even though they are all grown up.It is action adventure all the way. Something for everyone. The music is superb throughout. It is the classic tale presented in the most stunning way. You can not miss having a copy in your video library.

I hadn't watched this film for 20 years, but it must have left a big impression on me when I was seven, because I still found myself remembering the songs and completing some of the characters' lines. On the surface it's a straightforward fable about a unicorn who realises she is the last of her kind and embarks on a quest to find out what happened to the others, along the way teaming up with the inept wizard Schmendrick and a histrionic outlaw named Molly. Underneath it has a rueful, melancholy, slightly unsettling darker edge that occasionally emerges in throwaway lines of dialogue and can catch you off balance.

The animation looks great for the pre-digital era. The colours are still bright and the film doesn't seem to have aged at all. The voice cast is pretty stellar all round, with the actors bringing life to a host of weird and memorable creatures, and Mia Farrow's exceptional performance in the title role is almost worth the asking price alone. Musically it's no slouch either, with the opening theme being especially memorable. It's true that cold-hearted cynics may take issue with some of the song lyrics, or with Jeff Bridges' singing voice, but this really isn't a film for them. If you were a certain impressionable age when you first saw this, and you still haven't managed to get that tune out of your head, it's well worth revisiting.

An absolutely beautiful film from beginning to end. One is drawn into it's world straight away by the lovely theme song, memorable long after the film has ended, as too, are the characters. I found Christopher Lee's awesome performance as King Haggard the most memorable. It's easy to forget that this is an animated film. But although it can be described as a family film, many of it's allegorical messages will be lost on small children, however, don't let this last note put you off buying it for the children. They can watch it and see a lovely fairy tale and take more from it as they get older.
