A moving, sad, heartwarming and hearbreaking story
9 September 2018
I’ve read a few Linda green books before, and this has been on my TBR for a while. I found myself with an hour to spare so I picked it up..... I could NOT put it down. It was like, here’s a punch in the gut you weren’t expecting, and another - they just keep coming. I didn’t know really what the book was about when I started it, and it certainly did not disappoint. I was completely hooked from the first couple of pages. Every Linda green book I’ve read has done that, but this one, wow. There was a twist at every turn, a blow in many directions, a complete rollercoaster of emotions that keeps you guessing and wanting to know more. I haven’t read a book in a while that packs a punch like this one did.
Nicola is an ordinary Mum to 2 girls who, when we meet her, is going through the imminent loss of her grandmother. She is aware that there are secrets; her own Mum won’t go to see her and she doesn’t understand why there is an underlying rift between them. Her grandmothers last words will forever haunt her, she can’t let things lie, but could her digging into the past be to the detriment of her whole family?
The book opens up a lot of stories of the past, and in between what is going on with Nicola and her family, we have flashbacks and letters from her Mum and Grandmothers' past. Nicola’s mother seems cold, and unwilling to help her daughters quest for answers. But as the story and the past unfolds, we learn what has happened to her, her mother and also what happened to Nicola.
This is absolutely one of those novels where the characters stay with you for a very long time.
I found the story intriguing, sad, moving, and thoroughly heartbreaking. I cannot wait to get into another Linda green book ASAP!
