This album is an absolute masterpiece based on a story conceived by Alice and Neil Gaiman and released seperately as a collectable comic book. A superb concept, superb tunes, great lyrics, superb arrangements, superbly produced and Alice sounding back to his magnificent best. If you have missed this, frightened off by his early 80's dip in form buy this one, it will restore your faith, it's a classic. From the scene setter 'Sideshow' to the grand finale 'Cleansed By Fire' and including the hit 45 'Lost In America' the album is a macabre tale in the finest horror tradition. A rocking riff driven story of lost souls and the Last Temptation. Go buy it you will not regret it.

After the pop hair rock frivolity of 1989's `Trash' and 1991's `Hey Stoopid', many saw Alice's 1994 release, `The Last Temptation' as a roaring return to form, rooted as it is in a far more serious approach than its two immediate predecessors. Many also now consider it as part of a dark trilogy to which 2000's masterful `Brutal Planet' and its 2001 sequel-of-sorts, `Dragontown', can be added. The truth is, though it certainly sports a strong concept album style a la `Welcome to My Nightmare' (in this, a young boy - Steven, again - enters a horror sideshow that is really a metaphor for the horror of life and the modern world around him), it somehow lacks a sense of fun and the knowing wink that all four albums released either side of it manage to share to varying degrees. It also, despite the collaborators featured on it (notably Chris Cornell from Soundgarden on writing), feels oddly lumbering, dated and old fashioned.

Part of this problem probably sits with the trait `The Last Temptation' shares with many albums from big names in the 90s - and that is a number of different producers working on separate songs, rather than one unifying producer working on the entire record.

What an album. The first track (Sideshow) takes you by storm and the rest of the album doesn't let go. This is up there with Billion Dollar Babies and Welcome to My Nightmare. I cannot pick a favourite track. When the mood takes me I just listen.
