Amazon Review

Val McDermid just gets better and better. The Last Temptation is intelligent about undercover police work and psychological profiling as well as moving on the human cost to the people who have to do society's dirty work.

We are back with profiler Tony Hills and super-competent cop Carol, who we met in The Mermaids Singing and The Wire in the Blood. The couple's past experiences have created a bond between them as well as a certain inability to bear the sight of each other. They are brought back into co-operation by the needs of the job in its European dimension. Tony is persuaded to help track a European killer who drowns and mutilates psychologists, while Carol is working undercover to trap a drug trafficker whose dead lover spookily resembles her.

As always, McDermid writes brilliant criminals. She adds that deadening of sympathy which makes horror possible. Both aristocratic gangster Tadeusz and vengeful psychotic Mann have their reasons for being who they are, doing what they do. McDermid makes us care that her detectives succeed and survive just that little bit more than we care for her villains to escape. She writes excellent thrillers simply because she has a journalist's eye for both sides of each case. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Last Temptation is the third in the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series featuring the psychological profiler and a police chief. I've read it out of sequence, but it's a great standalone. In this outing, Jordan is looking for new challenges and follows an opportunity to work undercover in Europe. Hill is a university lecturer, missing the action as a profiler. Needless to say, the two are brought together in this fast paced psychological thriller where the serial killer's victims are psychologists.

It's a why rather than who dunnit. The motivation becomes clear early on. The tension lies in wondering who, in a large cast of characters, will join all the correct dots to make the connections. There's great suspense and pace as the action moves backwards and forwards between the main players. It's almost a book of two parts. One half centres on Carol Jordan; can she adapt as an undercover cop and fool a hardened villain into accepting her as a business partner? In parallel, the serial killer is upping the stakes as the body count rises.

There's some intricate plotting to keep the stories moving forward and it's not easy to see how it will all hang together. But as usual, Val McDermid's skill in keeping a number of balls in the air at the same time moves with ever increasing pace to a traumatic finale. No one is untouched by events in the final section.

Well written, kept me turning the pages well into the night and I enjoyed it.

Once again Tony Hill and Carol Jordan find themselves up to their necks (and beyond) in trouble, this time though they get themselves into separately as Tony has been playing teacher at St Andrews while Carol has continued on her detective career. Each is following their own cases, Tony on a serial killer with ties to the suffering caused by the Nazis and Carol on bringing down a drug lord and human trafficker, when they meet in Berlin where their paths and investigations cross. This is fast-paced and gripping with plenty of human insight and vulnerability from both sides that muddles the clear cut view of good and bad as the characters and the reader try and figure who is who. Life gets very complicated for Tony and Carol in this thrilling page turner.

Excellent writing and meticulously researched story as usual from Val McDermid, this story takes the lead characters Carol Jordan and Tony Hill across the water to Germany for an investigation set on the navigable waterways of Europe. There are two stories running side by side as Carol goes after an organised crime network involved in gun running, drug smuggling and people trafficking (and we learn how the 'open borders' of Federal Europe ideologues helps these industries) while Tony gets involved in helping track down a psychopathic killer, a storyline through which we are reminded that the crimes against humanity committed by the Nazis go far beyond the holocaust.
A fast paced novel that will keep most readers engaged to the last page.

superb story set in three countries. Although a bit slow to start it soon picked up the pace and I was reading every chance I got, even if it was only a page or two. I've just bought Mermaids Singing and can't wait to start it

Brilliant book. Great character development. Some parts a bit gruesome - but love the interaction between Dr Hill and DI Jordan. Have already bought the next in the series.. Can't put it down.
