Product description

Amazon.co.uk

Born aloft on a tide of gushing broadsheet plaudits, the second album from Hawksley Workman finds this sharp-suited Canadian mythmaker weaving tales of love, lust and passion like only a self-obsessive narcissist can. (Last Night We Were) The Delicious Wolves might have been entirely performed and produced by Workman himself, but this is no lo-fidelity document: the closest touchstones here are the preening showmanship of Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie or Roxy Music, as seen on the louche sexual wordplay of "Jealous of Your Cigarette" ("How you wanna suck on it/ And not meeeee...") and "Little Tragedies". There are many more strings to Workman’s bow, however: the bare, country-style "What a Woman" finds him struck virtually dumb with love, simply repeating the line over and over in sheer wonder, while "Old Bloody Orange"--featuring collaborator Sarah Slean on backing vocals--sees Workman hitch his baritone to a lazy Nashville strum. Meanwhile, the elaborate "Dirty and True" could almost have been plucked from a West End musical, all piano flourishes, Queen-style pomp riffage and vaudevillian chorus-line vocals. A startlingly confident work. --Louis Pattison
