Last Light by M. Pierce is one of those rare books that infuse adept storytelling with flawless prose. Pierce constructs this novel with an expert hand, writing with such command of the English language that even a seasoned lit snob like me sits the hell down and takes notes.

This sequel exceeded every crazy expectation I had over the past year, particularly the one where I wondered how the author would dig out from under that epic cliffhanger, but M. Pierce does it and does it well.

Like Night Owl, Last Light is an exquisite, delicious mishmash of all my favorite things (including fancy stuffed animals and a dreamy Matthew Sky).

Matt is still an a-hole of the Hemingway variety, but he is also sweet and vulnerable. Something as simple as a scene where he shops for hair dye made my heart skip. Despite being deeply in love with Hannah, Matt chooses to fake his death, disguise himself, and hide out instead of living under the burden of fame. Hannah helps Matt disappear, meeting him only for secret weekend reunions.

The infrequency and ephemeral nature of their visits takes its toll:

"Sadness overlaid everything and I couldn’t ignore it. Whatever else life contains, Matt once said to me, it’s sad because it has to end. At the time, I thought he was strange and morose. Now I understood. No happiness that weekend would go untainted because on Sunday I had to leave."

That aside, their distance is also kinda hot:

"You know I moan your name when I [have solo relations] alone."

Ugh. Flail.

While their distance leads to some of the hottest phone sex I’ve ever -not- taken part in, it also creates a luscious tension, largely imparted by two new characters—Seth and Melanie.

I have been really looking forward to reading this book. I loved Night Owl, it was my favourite read of 2013, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on Last Light to find out what happened next.
It was so good! Yet again, M.Pierce 's writing is captivating. So full of emotion, charm and humour. I found the plot intriguing and clever, it links together with Night Owl brilliantly. The puzzling epilogue from book one all became clear and straight away I was sucked back into the world of Matt and Hannah, their love for one another and the intensity of their relationship, before all the real angst and drama started to unfold. And oh my, there is definitely drama! Lots of secrets, lies and manipulation - Matt did do some daft things at times! But it's hard to stay mad with this character because it's clear that underneath all his dominance and crazy there is deep emotion, a little vulnerability and his actions are fuelled by his love and need for Hannah. Hannah - I thought her character really blossomed in this book. Still staying strong, trying to sort out Matt's mess (which resulted in her making a few mistakes of her own...) but so much more confident and a little more sass! One of my favourite Hannah lines "In bed, he could boss me around all night-and all day, for that matter-but not outside of it." Love her!
There are some new characters introduced to the story too. Melanie - yep, she made my hackles rise ;) And Seth, the middle Sky brother - he caused trouble. I really hope he makes an appearance in book three because I'm not sure how I feel about him yet. Maybe it's because he has a lot to live up to against the eldest brother Nate who has such unconditional brotherly love for Matt.

Ok so where to begin! First I'd like to start out by saying how much I LOVED Night Owl!! So much so I felt compelled to find out as much as I could about M. Pierce and subsequently followed on Facebook, twitter and then tumblr. I'm also part of the Night Owl Facebook Group too, so the build up for Last Light was nothing short of epic!! Anyway I digress!
Well! The start of this book was....dramatic! The prologue was so visceral I actually felt like I could feel the chill and taste the blood. I was then truly moved by Matthew and his loss of his privacy. It saddened me greatly to read the first chapter!
But then, for me, I kind of lost my groove whilst reading and for a short period I couldn't identify with the book and felt it became a little self serving!! However since finishing Last Light and knowing what I know now, I am going to revisit this part with a better understanding and appreciation.
Anyways, I soon snapped out of my funk and then became frustrated and at times outraged by what both Matthew and Hannah were doing!! The addition of Melanie and Seth fuelled my frustration and angst no end!! Just the fact that Matthew liked Mel was enough for me to dislike her!! And that Hannah kept on catching herself liking and comparing Seth to Matt, argh!!! To be able to elicit such emotions from readers is genius. Truly great writing. And Nate, what a sweetheart, showing such loyalty and devotion throughout the book.
In comparison to Night Owl, I felt Last Light was more detached romantically. Being the hopeless romantic that I am I found romance splashed throughout Night Owl but not so much in Last Light. That's not a bad thing however, and there were still tender moments within the story.
