Davies provides a very good overview and insight into the reign of Gruffudd ap Llywelyn and the historical context within which he operated. For those who did not know, it will be fascinating for them to read and discover how this Welsh king came close to recovering old Welsh lands east of Offa's Dyke, for good. His demise ensured that this dream was shortlived, but the border would remain porous to this day.
Without Gruffudd ap Llywelyn we would not have had Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, Gruffudd ap Cynan, Llywelyn the Great and the last Llywelyn ap Gruffudd; nor would we have had the Tudors.
Davies's book therefore adds knowledge to a critically important moment in Welsh history, and at the same time he has written a great story that has good pace and is enjoyable to read. It is delightfully accessible history, without the loss of academia.
