From the Inside Flap
Multiple-award-winning author Rick Riordan brings back smart-mouthed Texas P.I. Tres Navarre for his most dangerous case yet. If you think the academic world is deadly dull, you're half right....
When a controversial English professor is found shot to death, Tres Navarre -- P.I. and Ph.D. -- is the only local academic crazy enough to accept the emergency opening at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Police assure him they already have a suspect, so while they wrap up the open-and-shut case, all Tres has to do is teach three classes, grade on a curve ... and walk in a dead man's shoes.
It should be an easy assignment -- but one thing Tres doesn't do is easy. When the evidence in the case starts looking a little too perfect, when the killing doesn't stop, Tres takes on some extracurricular research into the heart of an assassin -- and lands in a high-stakes game of gangster honor on the darkest streets of San Antonio's West Side....

I first came across Rick Riordan by reading his children's series - Percy Jackson, which is what then led me to his mystery novels. I really enjoy his writing style and especially his sense of humour. Often I laugh out loud while reading his books. I'm on his fourth one and plan on reading them all. Very enjoyable for a relaxing summer.

The quintessential Texas adventure/mystery writer.

Come on Riordan-we want more Navarrare! These books constantly twist and turn while making you laugh, cry and everything in between. And for those of us who have spent time in the Hill Country, you have no trouble envisioning everywhere Navarre takes you. A true genius who can paint within words.
Surprise from the past

How I happened on this book from 2000 I don't know, but so glad I did. Not a bit cozy, not quite noir, just solid PI mystery. Reading, I felt like the old Batman TV shots - Pow! Smash! Kick! - not that the action was cartoon-like, but just so intense and fast paced. Tree Navarre is a great character, intelligent, bilingual, attractive, loves cats and children yet can kick ass with the best. The character development is sparsely nuanced and powerful. The mystery is multi leveled and gripping. And I just found this author who written so many books, they published an index book? I have to get the rest of this series!
Another great novel by Rick Riordan

I have enjoyed many of Riordan' s novels and The Last King of Texas was no exception. I love his little group of unique characters that make up his family. He does a great job of making them real to the reader and his life as a P.I. and professor lead to some very interesting situations. The book keeps you involved and turning the pages right to the end. As someone who winters in Texas, I enjoyed his descriptions of the area. Great book involving murder, drugs, corruption and revenge.
My favorite of the Tres Navarre Books

My favorite of the Tres Navarre Books. I really enjoy Rick Riordan as a story teller. He has a subtle sense of humor and a good grasp of human nature. It makes me sad that he'll probably never get back to this series. However these qualities are present in his "children's books." and I'm not ashamed to say that I eagerly await the Trails of Apollo series. A good story is a good story and it's why I've read all of his books.
