The story centres around Maggie, a young girl growing up in the slums of London witnessing the death & disease, struggle & poverty of the 19th century.
A time when Nuns ruled with an iron fist, baby farming was rife & factories were rising with little care for the health & safety of the unfortunate workers.
Maggie manages to escape this bleak future at the age of 12 by securing a position in a wealthy household as a companion to Lola, a spoilt & difficult child of the Corbetts. All is fated though & she leaves with much more than she bargained for, being thrown back into the despair of no hope, no love & the workhouse beckons.
With Family split, confusion, shame & guilt, Maggie has only one thing to live for, her secret.
The story takes us from rags to riches, but there is no cliche here. It is so well written that you are consumed into this child's life & all of those around her as she grows into womanhood & beyond, urging her from your seat to make the right choices.
The read is full of twists & turns, surprising you at many corners & towards the last 10% of the book, it becomes so intense & you have no idea what's going to happen & the suspense is thrilling.
Historically, the author has done her research & done it well. She knows how to write, & will entice you in & keep you there.
This read was so enjoyable that i jumped to buy another novel by her, but found none.
No author page? No links? Who is she?
A brilliant family saga, but no follow up, no other novels ( other than a short read of short stories, I dont want that, I want another exciting full novel!)
Will absolutely be buying more books from this author.
