This record deserves to be in every public library collection under "History of Comedy"....
You know, once upon a time, before the advent of affordable video recording, when the only mass audio visual medium was the 16mm lending library, the only way you could worship at the altar of your favourite TV comedians/ TV comedy shows was via the sound-only long playing record.... and such was the belief of the TV companies in the market for the stuff that records of TV or Radio comedy were not so much released as they broke out.... and then usually with some modifications to suit the medium. But they could have a long long life as such (check out the release history of the Tony Hancock LPs/CDs! and the records on Parlophone and Pye under "humour"). I saw this record at a junk shop, lost it as it had gone by the time I got back with some cash, and didn't see hide nor hair of it until I caught the review of this disc in MOJO....
It was worth getting. The sketches still evoke the images that originally accompanied them on our Sobell TV... This is a snapshot of comedy evolving from variety to the full blown lunacy of Python and the intermittent brilliance of "Q" I used to love this show; it still warms me with the fires of the past. There is a DVD of this show available that I would recommend as well; for me there is a rosy glow as these are the people that made me laugh through the traumas of schoiol and adolescence. Like many enthusiasts I want as many as possible to experience the pleasure I feel; I suspect that with changing tastes younger folk may not respond to these sketches, preserved as they are in the aspic of their times. Yet they should experience this; and those that don't enjoy the comedy for the laughs will be enriched by their seeing the foundation upon which many modern comedian build.
