About the Author

Like many authors, I started writing and reading at an early age. My “mentors” stretched from Jack London, Margaret Mitchell, Anne Golon to Tennessee Williams. They took me to unknown worlds, expanded my imagination and shared their gift of emotion and empathy for humankind with me. I earned my bachelor’s degree in journalism and went on to achieve a masters of arts in education. I have worked as a journalist and also as a teacher. I currently teach writing at a major entertainment, arts, and media institution in Central Florida. My new novel, Lantern in the Mist, is the first book in a dramatic trilogy set in the early twentieth century. I created it to be an exciting series that traces the birth and growth of modern America through dynamic characters who represent our country’s history. When I am not teaching writing or writing historical fiction, you will find me laughing with my Rat Terrier, Miss Eadie. I also spend time reading for pleasure and riding my pink bicycle through my neighborhood.

This is NOT a feel-good story by any stretch of the imagination. It is actually very hard and the main character has an unbelievable amount of bad luck to overcome.
I really enjoyed this book from Liliana Shelbrook and was unable to put this one down. I look forward to reading more from her.

This reminded me of Coelho's The Alchemist as it felt like the philosophy came first and the story second. For some that will be a great thing but it wasn't to my taste.

Having said that, I found the tale quite endearing.

My biggest issue overall was with formatting - several sentences were split into different paragraphs ruining the flow but this can easily be remedied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brave Soul with compassion and determination! 24 May 2016

Lantern in the Mist is a great reminder of how far women have come over the last hundred years. Kathleen is a brave soul with compassion and determination. Trial after trial she continues forward, reminding us to never give up, never lose faith. Even thou Kathleen thinks all hope has disappeared, deep down she finds the spirit to survive the rough journey called life to find happiness within herself. Bravo to Liliana Shelbrook for her writing, her faith and insight to the way things were and where we are today because of the sacrifices of long ago!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read of gold rush era and hard times... 4 Nov. 2014
By Melinda Matthews - Published on Amazon.com

This was a good read and although it was a little darker than I expected, I enjoyed it and Kathleen's journey. I am in the process of rediscovering my love for historical fiction... The only thing I didn't especially care for is a reference to "past lives" as I strongly believe we are only given one life to live on this planet. Something else could have worked well there... That aside, I heartily recommend this novella to adult readers. It has a good plot and strong characters and gives you a snapshot of how "gold rush fever" wrecked lives. I was pleased that the story stands alone well, but look forward to the next one in the series. Kathleen and Josie are only moving up from here!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lantern in the Mist: Volume One 30 Jan. 2015
By Kindle Customer - Published on Amazon.com

This was a special story about people going to the Gold fields of Alaska and about the many losses and hardships they endured while there. After all the losses that they were facing the best way for Kathleen and her disabled sister tried to get back to family in New York. The cold weather, starving for food with no way to purchase it. A special man who was working on a story tried to help the young orphaned ladies on their journey. A great book to read and enjoy historical romance kindle. A wonderfully written story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Review of Lantern in the Mist 25 Sept. 2013
By jadeshand - Published on Amazon.com

I really enjoyed this book. However, I was a bit disappointed there was a sequel. I wish people would get off this trend of trilogies. Patience isn't one of my strong points. Lanterns in the Mist is a well written historical western. This genre can be a chancy one to read. So much of it is cheesy little short stories of fifty pages of total fluff and nonsense that authors want you to pay $3.00 for that it's irritating to the extreme. They give the whole genre a bad name. So when a good historical western comes along, its a real treat. Ms. Sherbrooke obviously did a fair amount of research, as the book took us from the gold fields of Alaska, the desperate miners and the human predators who preyed upon them all the way across the country to New York. Her main character, Kathleen, was a marvel. Gentle and kind, her spirit took blow after blow from a world who considered women as less than nothing. No rights and finally realizing there could be no expectations, she fought to get herself and her paralyzed sister across the country to relatives in New York. Some of the things that happened to her and some of the sacrifices she had to make are hard to take. There were some minor formatting issues, but nothing too distracting and it ends on a cliffhanger, so beware. It's a good book, worth the money and the time. I think you'll be happy you read it.
