The pump is easily assembled and disassembled. The individual parts can all be boiled for sterilization which I would do at the end of the day.
The pump is really easy to use. One hand holds the breast in a c-grip and the fingers can "squeeze out" parts of the breast, the other hand pumps. Using the pump was joint-friendly and pumping ten minutes would not leave me with a sore wrist (and I never needed to pump more than that, don't know how the wrist likes it if you need to pump longer...).
The pump also didn't hurt my breast, suckling is definately more "painful". The vacuum never failed even though I have small breasts.
[Pumping didn't work so well at first because I wasn't sure about the best time when to pump, the let down reflex wouldn't come when only pumping (I would only get 20 ml or so, tedious!). So I got into the rhythm of pumping twice in the evening. My baby would go to bed at eight. I would give her one breast and pump the other right after (this way getting 50-100ml), this way taking still advantage of the let-down reflex from her suckling, and giving me enough time for this breast to fill again till she would wake up three hours later to feed on this breast, when I would, before going to sleep, pump once more the other breast.Read more ›
Pros - Good suction, easy to put together/take apart and clean, comes with spare parts (NEEDED, especially if using pump a lot - further explanation below), faster than an electric pump (got the milk fully out within 10 minutes for both sides after 2 hours as opposed to 30 minutes with the Advent electric), inexpensive to buy.
Cons - Have to switch hands to stop cramping after a while. If using the pump frequently, the valves and the diaphragm stop working after a time. LANSINOH NO LONGER DO THE SPARE PARTS FOR THIS OLDER MODEL OF PUMP!! So, if the included spare parts fail on you, you're screwed basically and have to buy a whole new pump as I found out after contacting them (Lansinoh customer service however is fantastic) although the pump is so cheap (the cost of two tins of formula) it's not like it's a major financial shock to the system. My first two valves failed within a month I think, but that's after 7/8 pumping sessions a day, every day.
TIPS - When I pump, I ALWAYS have to used one hand to hold the pump and the other to squeeze/massage the breast at the same time to help the suction suck the milk ducts to the fullest extent. If I didn't squeeze at the same time, I would only get about an ounce, if that, both sides out after 2 hours as opposed to the 3oz I typically get. Also, make sure you drink a lot of fluids as soon as you've finished a pumping session. And use nipple cream to help stop the breast getting sore from the suctioning. I'm reluctant to buy the new model they have as my two copies of this one have been so superb, but if my final diaphragm fails as well I'll have to!
Comes with lots of spare kit so when a valve ages there are spare parts on hand. The bottles are ideal for storage and easy opening (actually a really important feature which I learned after losing a lot of milk through storing in difficult to open pots which caused mass spillage every time - the stuff is such a labour of love to produce you learn to seek out the most protective kit to store it and waste none!)
Cons: Have had less than a month, used twice a day and the suction has gone. Am now going to try changing the valve (there are 2 spares), but had to go back to using my trusty Avent manual I purchased in 2007 (this has been used for 3 babies and still going strong, but does make nipples sore).
