From the Inside Flap
Rosemary Kirsteins acclaimed epic continues, as a servant of truth journeys through a world where the powerful rule by lies.
The steerswomen were seekers, collectors of knowledge, and whatever they learned was free for the asking. The wizards also had knowledge the knowledge to command nature itselfbut they jealously guarded their dark wisdom. The two groups have been at odds for centuries:
They do not agree, they do not converse, they do not associate.
Now the steerswoman Rowan has uncovered evidence that the master wizard, Slado, is conjuring dangerous spells in shadow, devastating the distant lands called the Outskirts and changing the course of the world. Rowan has no choice: Slado must be stopped . . . if he can even be found.
Following a dubious clue, Rowan and her friend Bel, an Outskirter, have come to the city of Donner, seeking answers from the past for a danger in the present. But the secrets go deeper than Rowan had ever imagined, compelling her to wonder: What if all this time she has been asking the wrong questions?

The book is mainly set in Donner so the story comes full circle location wise as this is where book one was partially set. The series can be placed in the sub genre of 'mystery fantasy' and for me that's my favourite type; I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Rowan's attempts to learn more about Wizards and their history by chatting to the locals and I loved that more was revealed about their machinations and the greater world and plot in this book; the most since book one. The blend of sci fi and fantasy is stupendous and I think that Rosemary Kirstein is a superb author who has created a fantastic world and characters in a very unique untapped genre.
Unfortunately, there is no resolution to the overall story and after coming this far I feel a little let down. You read because you want an absorbing beginning, middle and end to a story, but it seems there will be no end. This book was written years ago, so I'm extremely dubious that a fifth book will appear.
It's a real shame because the author created a great world but it's incomplete. In my opinion there was too much procrastination in books two and three, preventing the story from moving forward sufficiently, which is a shame. 8/10.
If you want a well written, absorbing, well plotted and intriguing series, this is the one for you - only problem being that we are waiting for Rosemary to finish the next one.....
Please Rosemary Kirstein, finish the next one soon!
