Not the type of book that I usually read but I picked it up on a whim and was glad that I did!

I don't want to give too much away so I will keep this brief...

It tells of discovery, love and hardship through the story two English families and their new lives in Australia. You will find yourselves really feeling for the characters and end up actually contemplating whether we are the barbarians.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone with an interest in: history, Australia, discovery or just anyone who wants to read a good book!

An incredible, informative and wonderfully written tale which blends fiction and fact into its pages. As usual Tamara McKinley's love of her native land is woven into the fabric of the story and the brutal beauty of newly discovered Australia is the backdrop for romance, hardship and courage.Difficult to put down - I can't wait for the stories of the next generation.

A book about three families set in the late1780s and in two countries, the UK and Australia and also features about the Aborigines is not the sort of book I normally read, but I am so glad I did. This is the first book in a trilogy which I have read in two days and I have already started the second one. I can't recommend it enough - a must read.

This is a beautifully written epic tale which captures the spirit and determination of those transported to the other side of the world, their interaction (or lack of it) with the indigenous peoples. Based on and around the Hawkesbury River north of Sydney, it made our visit there last year an absolute must. Holiday reading at it's very best

Brave and beautiful Australia, I was transported on the first fleet, watching that gorgeous landscape coming into view. A fabulous story of hardships and forever friendships formed. I can't wait to read the next.

I am a fan of Australian history fiction and this is another great example. Set in the 1700's it brings Cornwall and Australia together. If you have read Remember Me by Lesley Pearse there are similarities with the story of Mary Broad. This is a great book (they both are!) and depicts life for the convicts beautifully.

This is the 1st book in the trilogy and starts in England and then goes to Australia at the time when convicts were sent there. A very fast moving book, which gives you a very good insight into what they had to go through. There are quite a few characters and I would recommend you read the next two books straight after otherwise you will forget which person belongs to which family. Very very good read.
