Veronica would soon find the answer to Tommy's query. She was pulled into a grey land filled with goblins and flowers that threatened to eat her. Another surprise awaited her when she found out that Tommy and his family hadn't moved away, they had been abducted and taken to another dimension.
In a Land of Hatred is the first in this series about the land of Hatred Blooms. It's a nice solid story with interesting characters. I particularly like that the goblins are portrayed with more depth than in most fantasy novels. I can't wait to get started on the next book.

What I liked about the work was a fresh take on "dark fantasy". This isn't the typical brooding man-boy vampire in love fantasy which is dominating the teen reader lists these days, but more of an exploration of the darker side of life through fantasy. The alternate dimension of Hatred Blooms has more in common with Bi-Polar manic depression and dreary mundane life with little hope than it does with exciting romance and whirlwind adventure. As such it comes across as a breakthrough work by a promising up and comming young author. While there is a certain amount of attraction between the protagonist and her childhood friend Tommy, in my mind it greatly resembles the kind of disfunctional realtionship of two depressives hanging onto each other more out of mutual need than romantic desire.
This kind of reality of disfunctional people wrapped in the sureal fantasy of the perpetually gray and gloomy Hatred Blooms hearkens back more to dark psychological thriller well known to the fans of Arthur Hitchcock, than fantasy adventure. Overall I found the work enjoyable to read, and an interesting character study of the protagonist. The work shows some of the weaknesses common to new authors finding their voice in writting, but doesn't suffer greatly in readibility because of it. Many of the plot directions were unexpected and surprising which is refreshing. I would recommend this work to anyone looking to explore the truly gloomy side of fantasy writing.
This novel explores the timeless theme of a young woman learning to appreciate all the little joys and comforts of her life after she is forced to live in a brutal and harsh land. I think there is a bit of Veronica in all of us who tend to dwell on the negative aspects of our lives and forget about the beauty that's all around us. "In a Land of Hatred" is a great and imaginative story, but it's also a good reminder that we shouldn't take anything in our lives for granted. It's rare to find a novel that's an enjoyable read with a worthwhile message that simply unfolds throughout the story without coming across as preachy.
In a Land of Hatred would appeal to fans of the fantasy genre, especially teens and young adults. This book would also be a good recommendation for those who enjoyed Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series.
