Top customer reviews
White wines. These are crisp, refreshing whites, all of which are very well made and good examples of their kind:
Split Rock Sauvignon Blanc is a classic NZ Sauvignon Blanc with very forward acidity and powerful cut grass and gooseberry flavours.
Campanula is a very nice Pinot Grigio which shows how far winemaking has come in many once-despised areas. This is at east the equal of a lot of much more prestigious-sounding Italian Pinot Grigios.
Gooseberry Bush is a cracking South African Colombard/Sauvignon blend. Although it's not named for its flavour, there's a refreshing gooseberry tartness lurking here which I love. Really good.
Visionario Venezie is a very enjoyable, clean-flavoured wine, typical of the Veneto region.
Vina Tarapaca is a lovely, smooth Sauvignon Blanc. Excellent.
Lime Leaf was a revelation to me. It's grape is Verdejo, which gives a dry, citrusy and really refreshing wine. After years of regarding Spanish white wine with suspicion, this one has converted me.
Red wines. If you like full bodied reds you can't go far wrong here:
Cabalié is a rich, rustic wine from the far south of France, made in the tradition dating back to Roman times with a hint of sweetness. I like it very much.
El Bombero is a 15% Garnacha from Spain which to me sacrifices some character and flavour to strength - but many, many people disagree and love it.
Black Stump is a deep, dark, immensely fruit laden Australian Shiraz/Durif. I'm a big fan of Durif and, although this isn't a subtle wine, if you like a huge, jammy mouthful you'll love this.
Waxed Bat is a very nice, full bodied Malbec, Argentina's signature grape. An excellent wine for the price, I think, and one of my favourites.
Il Papavero is pretty well Laithwaites house red - and it's a very decent house red. It's not packed with individual character, but it's smooth, tasty and very drinkable indeed.
Pillastro is my favourite of the lot. Primitivo is the same grape as the Zinfandel, but for me this has far more depth and character than many Californian Zinfandels. It has very full flavours of soft fruit and cherries with a little oak and a slightly smoky undertone which I like very much. It's a fine example of the quality which is now coming out of southern Italy.
I hope that gives an idea of what to expect. I can recommend this case very warmly.
Sent from The land down under to my folks back in blighty. A Superb Thankyou gift that will cater and tickle all taste buds.
Great variety of wines and so would highly recommend to all.
