First, let me say that this "short novel" is definately NOT short on character development, plot, and romance. In fact, Ms. Crosby manages to pack so much into her "short" novel, that most other full-length ones pale in comparison. It is not your run-of-the-mill novella that you find on Amazon. It is most certainly worth the purchase price.
The style of this story reminds me a lot of a Nicholas Sparks novel, mostly because of the setting and the occasional bittersweet memory. But unlike a NS novel, it didn't break my heart and make me want to throw it against the wall (I don't like his notoriously sad endings!!) This book definately gives you the happily ever after that we all love.
After an intial meeting she is not likely to ever forget, Annie finds herself thrown together with handsome Jamie by a mixup at the rental office. Without anything else available for the July 4th week, they compromise and share the house--she and her dog Lady take the upstairs apartment, he takes the downstairs. After all, avoiding him shouldn't be a problem since she's not there to socialize, but to set free her grandmother's ashes in the nearby river, her grandmother's favorite place growing up. Jamie has other plans, though, and by first befriending Lady, is able to break into Annie's meticulously scheduled plans.
What follows is a beautiful, sweet romance that turns into true love for two previously lost souls. It's just wonderful! I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could!
The start of the book was strong. Annie walks into a house she rented for the week only to find a naked man. What been way to start a vacation even if that vacation is a little morbid. Annie liked to plan everything down to the last detail. She honestly believes planning will help keep everything moving along smoothly and stop unnecessary chaos.
----- At the moment, Annie didn't have answers and not having answers, she discovered, was equally as unnerving as facing a rather large, unfamiliar penis. Whether or not he was a big dick, too, remained to be seen. But this is what she did know: A) There was a naked man in her beach house--the house she'd rented more than six months ago--the house she'd already paid for, and B) She had to have this house and no other house would do. If she couldn't have this house, she might not find the nerve to do what she had to do. Symbolic or otherwise, the house was part of her plan and plans were meant to be followed--that's why you made them in the first place. The instant you yanked out a single brick from the foundation, the entire structure collapsed.
I can just see the look on Annie's face when she walked into a house with a naked man. A look of shock and surprise all at once with her eyes bulging a little, trying hard to not look at anything but the man's face but failing.
I will not go into more details about the book. I would end up giving everything away and I really do not want to spoil anything for future readers.
This was a quick, fast and sweet read. A hundred times better than most contemporary romances published today. The author did not focus on sex as the main object for the story and for this reader that was what makes it so great.
I would love to read this as a full novel length story but it is perfect as is.
Thanks for another great read Tanya.
The bunnies and I give this book 5 carrots.
This was an enjoyable short story that is perfect to relax with and read in one sitting. It's a definite recommend if you are in the mood for a heart felt read. Even the dog plays an important part of the story. Loved the ending!
* Previously read in 2012. Was read again on 6 May 2016 for writing of review.
I liked the ability of the author to put real feelings in her writing. Her characters are not perfect; they have everyday flaws. They could be you or me?
The stars of this book, Jaime and Annie, are normal, confused, thirtyish humans. They must overcome themselves to end their loneliness. The way the two of them first work against their feelings and how the get to their happiness is well crafted by this author. All assumptions you may have about HEA should be left by the roadside.
A fun story I highly recommend.
