Set in the First World War and just after, Lady Daphne is re-introduced by her mother, to Count Johann Dionys Psanek (more often called Count Dionys), who ia a POW recovering in hospital. Whilst waiting for her husband to be released and the war to end Lady Daphne becomes more closer to the Count, indeed you can feel the lust sizzling on the page. When her husband returns and before the Count is repatriated he stays with Daphne and husband, where they start to have an affair. As the aristocratic order is starting to change and fall, and people's perceptions change due to the horrors of war some may find Daphne's husband a bit of a wet weekend when he finds out about the affair - but his perception of life has changed due to his experiences.
This is a very melancholic novella and alhough there is no descriptive passages on the sex between Dahpne and Count Dionys there is a lot going on between the lines. Admittedly this isn't the best of Lawrence's works, but still way and above what most authors write - and the lust building between Daphne and the Count, although restrained will be more than enough to keep you reading.
