In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.
From the manufacturer
Greta has rapidly emerged as one of Hollywood’s most engaging actresses. Greta was last seen in Mike Mills’ 20th Century Woman. Here she received 2 Academy Award nominations for “Best Directing” and “Original Screenplay.”*
Saoirse began her career at 13 years old with her critically acclaimed performance as Briony Tallis in Atonement, earning her Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actress.**
Laurie received the 2017 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her performance in A Doll’s House, Part 2.
What does “Lady Bird” Signify ?
Christine denied her given name as a way of finding her true identity by creating a new one.
Mothers and Daughters
This relationship IS the love story of the film, feeling empathy for both characters. Most women have an infinitely beautiful and complicated relationship with their mothers.
The role was hers two minutes into the read. She was willful, funny and heartbreaking.

A waste of time and money, watch something else.
Not a great deal out of the ordinary happens in this film, but what there is nicely done.
A teenaged girl is in her last year at a private Catholic Day School in Sacramento, California. She argues with her mother, changes her mind as to who is her best friend at school, finds a boyfriend, splits up with him and finds another boyfriend. Finally she leaves for University in New York, having grown up a little and stopped being so cross with her mother.
Bought as a DVD, there are Extras that tell us something about what the writer and director wanted to achieve in making the film. These are interesting, although not interesting enough for me to want to listen to the entire film-length director commentary.
In the ‘Extras’, snippets of an interview with the actress Saoirse Ronan are intercut with other material. I would have preferred an uninterrupted interview with her to get used to her out of character, as her hair and accent are so completely different that it is at first hard to realise it is the same person.
Ms Ronan was one of my main reasons for watching ‘Lady Bird’. My favourite of her films (although too strange and ‘arty’ for some viewers) is ‘Lost River’ about the decay of a Detroit suburb. Second best is ‘Brooklyn’, about a young woman emigrating in around 1950 from a small town Catholic Ireland to Brooklyn in New York City and the contrast between the two. I put ‘Lady Bird’ a close third, but I’m sure some viewers will like it the best.

To save seeing my wife disappointed I turned to Amazon, and for what I paid to own it, it was on my account and wife watched it that night, she said it was a good film so worth buying.
