This isn't the best live Dead set around (that's hardly a surprise, there being so many) but there's no shame in that. Not unusually for the Dead, it takes a while for their voices to warm up, but when they do they're in fine form. The playing is also excellent, although that wonderful magic they were capable of seems occasionally absent. It's brilliant, but it's not quite "up there"...
All in all though, an superb buy; but not for a first-timer (try Rockin' the Rhein, or Live Dead). If you already love the Dead, you won't be disappointed.

What a truly great release from a legendary series of concerts in 1971. The Dead were just about to break big with their first ever gold record, and were seen as an awesome concert draw. Here's why. Whatever they tried sounded interesting, and they covered all the musical bases.
If the sheer amount of CDs seems a bit overwhelming, start with Disc 4 and get into it that way. You get a real sense of the excitement and power they generated, and this collection easily rates as one of the finest ever live albums released by anyone.

What a truly great album. This 4 CD masterpiece is a great place for any body wanting to find out what makes the Dead a great band. It allows the Dead to show off their musicianship and their range of musical styles, jazz, blues, rock, country, folk - and with Pigpen's rap during good lovin' there maybe a case that the Dead invented rap!
What this album demonstrates is a band at their best, enjoying the music they are playing and pushing the boundaries of the interpretations of the songs. Keeping things moving and evolving.
The shame is that in todays music world this type of approach to playing is limited. Few bands try to revisit and reinterpret their music, Neil Young and Bob Dylan are notable exceptions. Hopefully there will be a backlash against boy bands and manufactured pop. If you are looking for something that has feeling then get this album. Sit back late in the evening and listen to it in one sitting - its good for the soul.
