Product Description

Aspiring burlesque artist Peggy Martin (Marilyn Monroe) gets her chance of stardom when she is taken out of the chorus line and becomes a huge hit. Before long, Peggy is being romanced by a wealthy bachelor, who wants her to give up the stage and move in society circles. Peggy's mother, Mae, is not impressed, and warns her daughter that star-crossed romances seldom last for long.

The first starring role for Marilyn Monroe came from Columbia in this B movie program filler. The film isn't long enough to bore anyone (61 minutes!).

This is a classic backstage musical plot with Marilyn becoming the new burlesque queen when the star of the show walks away. And as she falls in love with a wealthy young admirer, her mother (Adele Jergens) tries to warn her and over-protect her. Will she make it? Will love blossom? Will she be accepted in her husband's milieu??? What a suspense.

The film is really worth buying for young aspiring actress Monroe singing and dancing through a couple of numbers (including "Everybody needs a da-da-daddy"). Even then, she showed screen presence and that magnetism that shall make her a true star a few years later. The rest is fairly forgettable (although I didn't know Adele Jergens could dance like that).

The plot explores the idea of being accepted as a chorus girl. Will the upper class set acknowledge such a lowlife species? The story is trivial but holds an interest as Marilyn Monroe (Peggy) carries herself well in one of her early entries. Thankfully, we see her deliver her lines without that irritating baby-talk that became her trademark. She talks properly in this film! So, it's a treasure if only for that.

There is a good segment where Adele Jurgens (Mae) shows off some dance moves - probably the best moment of the film. The music is ok, Marilyn Monroe sings a couple of songs, but nothing too special.

The flimsy story wraps itself up over the course of an hour, but we watch it for Marilyn Monroe.

Because her iconic image has become timeless,it is always hard to believe that Marilyn Monroe is an actress of the nineteen fifties. This is her second film released in 1948, featuring her singing "Can't you see I love you", dancing gracefully and blithely in shimmering silver and white. A second solo number sees her slinky and seductive in a long sequined black dress belting out "Every Baby Needs a Daddy". At the end of this number she is joined by the Chorus cleverly operating walking dolls.
Marilyn plays Chorus girl Peggy Martin, and Adele Jergens plays her beautifull Mother,'Mae Martin' also in the chorus, and in a flashback to younger days perfoms "Crazy For You" another slinky big band number. After emerging as a soloist 'Peggy Queen of Burlesque' is wooded every day with orchids by wealthy Randy Carrol (Rand Brooks) and accepts his proposal of marriage. It is set in the days when Ladies of the Chorus were not welcomed in wealthy social circles, but at the engagement party Randy's elderly Mother (Nana Bryant) sings "You are Never Too Old-to do what you did", pretending to be a former Burlesque Queen herself to put the record straight, and everyone at their ease.
This is a completely enjoyable romantic comedy, aided by Eddie Carr, Stephen Gray, and The Bobby True Trio. Produced by Harry A Romm, and directed by Phil Carlson, this film is a 'must have'; to see a young and radiant Marilyn Monroe.

Picture and sound quality is excellant, Marilyn lights up the screen even in this early film and shows she could act and sing before becoming the icon that she did, to this day no other actress can light up the screen like Marilyn could

.

MARILYN MONROE was a young starlet when she appeared in this early film from 1948. She shows here her singing talent for the first time ever. She steals every scene as she struts her stuff and makes love to the camera as only Marilyn can.

Any Marilyn Monroe fan MUST add this film to their collection!

I love this movie i have seen all of marilyns movies as i love her but this is one of my faves along with gentlemen prefer blondes its only an hour long and it is such a good movie the wee songs in it are so cute and sweet and its one of marilyns few roles where she is a little more of a serious character shes not exactly the marilyn most would remember at this time she is more the style of norma jean/marilyn with her longer hair the style in this movie is also amazing 1940s burlesque her mother in the movie is also gorgeous very glamourous movie for the time and underated the reason i say its cute is because the flim is so innocent it has a universal rating get this if u love marilyn xx

This movie, featuring Marilyn Monroe in her first leading role, was a wonderful addition to my Monroe collection. It was a little cheesy in that they do many things in the movie that were very typical of the low budget movies of the time. Overall, however, it was very fun and had a good story line. I am glad I bought it. It isn't available to rent anywhere in the states, so I was taking a chance. It was worth it. I will be watching this movie many times over.

One of her earlier films but equally impressive. Its B&W but still appeals. She plays a chorus girl who has to stand in for another girl who goes off ill. She becomes a bit of a star due to this. Great fun.
