For cooks, collectors and cat-lovers, this story is a tale about an obsession, which contains both tender parts and grizzly bits and may even teach public health inspectors a thing or two.

de Bernieres book is a tale of a man who collects the labels from tins of cat food. Not a marvellous premise although anyone who has read his previous books will understand how his captivating style can enrapture and delight.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough although I do think it is a little pricy.
It starts with a boy who lived "when there was electric light but no television" and who grows into a ordinary man with a passion for collecting catfood 'labels'.This love which is for him greater than anything else in the world, which turns into an obsession and... A delightful human character presented with equally good prose.
Although I had read reviews saying that it was slender etc, I was suprised that it was such a slight volume even though it cost as much as an 'ordinary' paperback. I wouldn't say that the production is that special, I have a feeling that the spine will crack if I open it out.
That said, good for Bernieres if he is the one profiting, I just hope the publisher isn't making a killing at his expense.
