I love this book and referred to it several times a week for the entire duration of my lab career - even after nearly ten years in the biomedical sciences! The first volume of the Lab Ref books is filled with useful information and is aimed squarely at those in biomedical fields (specifically biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics). Even if you think you are too experienced to benefit from Lab Ref, it's fantastic to have around for those moments when your brain fails you and you simply can't remember how to perform a protocol you don't use often, or how to make a calculation that has slipped your mind. For greatest benefit, buy this and use it along with Lab Ref v. 2.

The book itself is in a hard cover that looks a little like a miniature binder and is sturdy enough to withstand frequent use. Inside, the pages are coil-bound, allowing them to lie flat when the book is opened so that you can refer to it while your hands are occupied with experimental materials or covered by gloves you don't want to contaminate. The pages are glossy, but not so much so that they are dificult to read, and the font is well chosen, though you have to be quite close to the book to be able to read it easily. A very clear book and an excellent reference!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lab Ref review 9 Mar. 2006

This book is a great aid for the bench. It enables you to quickly find recipes for reagents used often, without the hassle of digging through volumes of more advanced manuals, and also provides tips that may be unavailable in such advanced manuals. It's also handy for the lab amateur, providing information as basic as how to prepare 1M stock solutions, and goes as far as telling you how to aliquot and store reagents when necessary! I highly recommend this book, as I've made good use of it in the short time since I purchased it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as advertised... 31 Oct. 2006

This is NOT a general chemistry lab reference book. It IS a biochemistry reference book. If you need a lab reference for general chemistry you need to look for something else.
