With its iconic orange design and secure form factor, the Rugged has been one of our most popular hard drives. With the Rugged Mini, we've shrunk the Rugged, and added tons of new features, making it a solid investment for on-the-go data transport. The LaCie Rugged Mini Hard Disk shares features with our popular Rugged Hard Disk, like shock resistance, drop resistance, and a rubber sleeve for added protection. I have a Apple Mac with USB3 ports.... (also thunderbolt which are Thunderbolt 2) but I'll be upgrading soon and the new Macs have only got USB-C - so this drive will be compatible for a while on this basis. Meanwhile, if you have USB3 ports (which most people do am guessing) then this drive works perfectly. The cable it ships with is USB-C to standard USB so this is a highly compatible drive generally. These cables are available everywhere for buttons if you wanted some spares....
Try not to get confused about Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt 3 uses the USB-C connectors - so I'm guessing some people are tripping up on this. This drive it seems won't perform to Thunderbolt 3 standards, since they don't say it will - but USB-C (which I think is sometimes called 3.1) is already very fast - so this is perfect for people using video and photo storage. I'm a professional photographer by the way that does a lot of video stuff too. This drive is ideal!
This is a BUS powered drive, so this is again very good for field operators - It's portability and padded drive protection are good and I've got other versions of this design including a TB2 one from years back, and it's not died on me. Can't say so much for the 4TB bus powered USB3 Seagate drives I also bought. I've had to say goodbye to three of these already since they just seized up... causing me some interesting backup shenanigans! I've also lost a couple of WD drives over the years and I own about 10 other Lacie desktop drives - most of which have never fallen over on me.
Lacie are a proven and industry standard manufacturer and this drive, being 5TB is also a cut above in terms of storage to its competitors. I would always advise everyone to keep at least two copies of everything in two separate places... all drives do eventually die folks.
This world is constantly changing with speed and storage but right now, but this drive is the best in terms of price, compatibility, portability and reliability.
The photo looks correct to me by the way (some say this is the Thunderbolt version) either Amazon have changed the image since these people commented, or there's something I'm not seeing.... but, as previously mentioned, TB3 uses a USB-C connector anyway...
It gets points for being simple plug-and-play, but the aforementioned orange condom has the great little quality of preventing the USB cable from inserting fully, meaning that accidental unplugs can and will happen.
Thankfully I paid extra for LaCie's data recovery plan, but this unfortunately means I'll be getting my files back on a REFURBISHED LaCie drive, so arguably worse than what I started with. I've spent £120 on a hard drive brand that could pack in at any second.
Le my wasted money be a lesson for you. Don't fall for the "super rugged" gimmick. Spend a little more for Western Digital.
This 4tb drive died 6 months after it started "ticking", which spells the end of the drive. The return process is complicated by the fact that you need to supply a product code which is NOT printed on the drive itself. It is not unreasonable to provide this but not printing these clearly on the product is an error (numbers and code cannot be found under the orange rubber covering as well). Of course, as the drive is dead, Lacie's suggestion to use a software tool is rubbish - nothing shows up.
After many attempts I was able to get a product code by entering the serial number first. Why This is so complicated, I don't know but it's made to be complicated and difficult.
On the plus side, Lacie did ship a new drive in less than a week including delivery. Also, the drive is quite fast.
The cable is poorly fitting and of a special type.
Not sure if this happened because the USB plug came slightly unplugged and caused a fault of some kind. I have another LaCie Rugged Drive which was connected at the same time and that one, which I've had for more than 2.5 years, is working perfectly fine.
