I ordered the WD 2 TB and then 1TB units first, but found them to be so overly complicated with drivers and software, before I even got to the part of formating the unit, so as I could use it on mac and windows. Both failed. I then ordered the Bipra 1TB tiny unit and sent that back to amazon also, as that comes with a mini 2.5" cdrom, with the drivers on. My mac pro cannot use mini disks and the software is not available online.
I then turned to this Lacie porche 1TB unit. I was hesitant as there were only 9 reviews, incomparison to over 200+ the with WD units.
1. This unit looks smart and professional.
2. The software is SO easy to get up and running. You plug the unit into your mac or windows usb hub and then open up the LACIE folder and then click Lacie Set-Up and then there are 5 questions and a slider bar.
3. The slider bar asks you to partition how much you want (just mac alone) or how much you want (mac and windows combined, FAT32). I chose mac and windows 100%. The other few questions are about if you want extra things like password protections etc.
4. The unit is effortlessly formated and then you can use it straight away to drag and drop your files on.
It was so easy. Granted the device is slightly longer than the WD (11.5cm) and the porche unit is 13cm long. Arrhhhh, but so what, the unit is quality and easy to use with both macs and windows.
The stylish aluminium enclosure is a perfect match to the Mac Book Pro,
LaCie have paid attention to detail not only with regard to the superb, simple, classic yet modern design, but also by including 4 small self adhesive rubber feet so the drive is cushioned when in use.
The drive is very fast, and is almost silent in use.
I was unable to run the loaded software as I am using Lion, but, Disc Manager sorted it out with a reformat.
Overall, a very small, beautifully made, very high quality drive, which is almost silent in use and which does the job with style and sophistication.
The LaCie Porsche Design 2TB USB 3.0 Portable 2.5 inch External Hard Drive is extremely compact and remarkably silent for a drive of this capacity.
Physical installation was simply just connecting one end of the supplied cable to the drive and the other to a USB3 port on my PC. Power is taken from the USB port, so there is no separate power supply.
When I first connected it, (to a Windows 10 system) I wasn’t sure if it was running, but when I placed my hand on it I could just feel a low vibration. I then noticed, there is a small green LED on top of the case, which is lit when not in use, and flashes when the drive is working. There is no on/off switch; not a problem for me, but it could be for some.
The drive come with the light version” Genie backup software, which doesn’t allow full system backups, bundled in. As I’m using the drive to archive video files, I didn’t install it.
Surprisingly for such a fast drive of relatively high capacity, it has no air vents but, even after completing a very long data archive, it was just warm to the touch and, once the transfer was finished, it cooled down very quickly.
I have three other LaCie drives which have given no problems for three years, two years and one year respectively, so I have every confidence in the brand, and no reason to suspect that this drive is any different.
Very pleased with the product, it connected to the Time Machine application seamlessly and other than having to define how much space I wanted to allocate to it (all in my case) it pretty much set itself up.
It's very well made and looks sleek, however it does seem a tad expensive when compared with other drives on the market
Given that it is a quality product - Recomended
Update: I got my IT guy to have a look at this and he found that the software had been corrupted, which is not the fault of the drive. It works fine now, so I retract my earlier criticism.
When you plug it in, you are presented with the autorun program (at least I was on a Mac), which guides you through the set up process, configuring how you want the drive partitioned (if you do), and whether or not you wish to install their encryption or backup management software.
The device transfers data exceptionally fast - clearly the 'superspeed cable' is working overtime!
It is really handy to have power over USB, making the drive far more portable than similar ones which require you to lug a power adaptor around with you too.
This product is a little on the pricey side given that you can get 1/2 TB drives for about £75, but I suppose you're paying for both the sleek design and the brand name.
Only slight criticism of the drive is the USB port itself - it's a little on the stiff side - it is (certainly in my case) a case of actually pushing the connector into the drive, rather than it gently slotting in.
Overall, good product, excellent design, slightly pricey.
