I have two other external hard drives, a 500Gb Freecom and a 250Gb LaCie Porsche, but needed another. The Freecom works well but just isn't in the same class as the LaCie so I decided to get another LaCie, this time the Minimus 1Tb.
It is a very solid unit, very compact (smaller than the 250Gb Porsche), so quiet that you don't even know it's on and if it is as reliable as my first LaCie, I'll have no complaints at all.
But......Why oh why did they put the little pale blue light, which shows that it's turned on, on the back edge of the unit and not on the front?????
I have the 3 drives stacked on top of my PC to save desk space and the light just cannot be seen. I've already forgotten a number of times to turn it off after use, finding it still on a few days later. The other two units have the light on the front so no mistakes there.
Come on LaCie, you make great drives, with great design, just give a little more thought to the practicalities of use.
Having got that off my chest, I would still fully recommend the drive to anyone.

Extra words....

I have now had the unit for a little while and, as expected, have had no problems at all. I have now stuck a bit kitchen foil to some cardboard, cut it to a dome shape and stuck it with sellotape to the back of the unit. Bent it forward a little and, as it reflects the little blue light, I can now see whether it's on or not from the front. Simple remedy but still shouldn't have to do it. Good tip though for anyone with the same problem.

Looks great, very small, very silent, doesnt get too hot, and is simple. Havent used included software but who does? Very fast as its USB3 but not 5gb/s like advertised. Good construction with rubber feet so it wont slide off your desk and minimises noise or vibration. Overall very good. Only negatives are no stand for keeping the drive in a verticle positon and the USB cable is a bit short which is fine for my setup. Reccomended for a USB3 HDD.

Does what you'd expect from a top manufacturer. Easy set up for PC and / or Mac. Fast USB3 speeds. Still only just warm after transferring about 600GB of files of all sizes. USB2 compatible.

This is a great drive, not all the much smaller than the LaCie Porsche, but a little more simple so I like the design better.

I'm only using it with USB 2.0 so I have no idea of it's real USB 3.0 speed potential, but I've partitioned it for use with TimeMachine and Carbon Copy Cloner (it's bootable) on my Mac so I do not require high transfer speeds.

I formatted it straight out of the box so I can't speak of the software it comes with.

Bought this as my laptop memory was full and was buying a new laptop and wanted some backup and to use in the transfer of photos and music.
Pros, software simple to install first time round, looks very nice, very quite, super solid. The difference of using the 2.0 USB on my old laptop to the 3.0 on the new one is incredible.
Only Cons, instructions are not very clear, had to re-read through a couple of times to see what i needed to do for a full system back up. Also when I went to install the hard drive on the new laptop there was no automatic installation of the software like there was when I plugged for the first time into the old laptop. I havent done a system back on the new one yet so still need to work how to do this, again instructions aren't great. Amazons packaging wasnt great, although nothing was damaged, but thats luck more than anything else.
I spent a long time researching hard drives and found lots of horror stories of people losing data on cheap manufacturers drives so decided to pay the extra (around £20) to get this Laice. My advice pay the money for a decent brand like this. Also watch the prices, they change very regularly, when I bought this the price had dropped by £10 from the day before, when I checked a week later it had gone up by £15 from what I paid, so pick your moment.
Cant go wrong with this

Works well with Apple's Time Machine. Very reliable, and works continuously in the background for holding back-up data. Only problem is that it doesn't restart automatically when we have electric power outages, so, after rebooting the computer, it is often a day or two before I notice the back up is not operating and I need to switch the LaCie back on. I know it is a simple thing to do but .....

I wanted a reputable manufacturer and this was it, a nice solid feeling HDD, with a brushed metal finish.

My PC is USB3 and I wanted the extra oomph and speed of transfer rates provided by this generation.

The drive also sports a nice unobtrusive blue LED to indicate on/working.. with the added advantage of a rear ON/OFF switch, a real bonus!

I was not disappointed at all and the unit is well worth the asking price, plus Amazon had the cheapest deal around.. so doubly pleased!

Get one you won't regret the choice.. well worth my 5 Stars!!

It may seem hard to believe but this external drive turns itself OFF when the PC or laptop it is connected to is turned ON!

View my video report to confirm this - it really does!

As a result it cannot be used as, for example, an unattended backup store for a PC which turns itself on during the night to back up new data.

Nothing in the technical description suggests that it performs this illogical action. Don't waste your time buying it for unattended operations, as I did.

I'm giving it 1 star because LaCie made a perfectly good USB drive completely useless for a common backup application by adding and not detecting this blatant design error.
