Format: Paperback
Sorry to be over the top but this must rank among the best books on fashion ever ever ever (at least post 45) ever. Not only does it cover all the popular icons of our times - Elvis, Hendrix, Bowie, Jagger, yes, even Pete Doherty and Goldfrapp - but it details how fashion and style have developed, taking in everyone from Chanel and Stella McCartney and YSL and Katharine Hamnett and Galliano and Westwood to Jonny Rotten and Sid Vicious etc etc.

I've actually got a degree in this subject and there is stuff here I and my tutors have never even seen - shops like Universal Witness and Alkasura? Never heard of ithem but this book has photos and details of people like Bolan, Led Zep and Bowie buying their clothes there.

It's got a great CD with Bowieand Elvis on, and things like personal postcards from Joe Strummer and Paul McCartney dancing around in Soho.

I wish i'd had this when I was doing my finals!

As someone who is music and history junky, and a developing interest in fashion and style.

All I can say is: it is thoroughly readable, great pictures, great interviews, and - historical method was quite sound! I feel I have learnt a lot about a subject I know little about.

I've learnt a great deal from this book, and will recommend very highly to my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great book! 14 July 2001
By Peter Justin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Wow - I'm amazed that this book hasn't got more attention. First off it looks like a coffee table bookw ith loads of good pix and graphics - there is one of McLaren & Westwood from 1971 which is incredible. I've got all the books and pix relating to the Sex Pistols and this pair but I've never seen that one before.
Anyway there are loads of examples for everyone - the Elvis pix are great as are the Beatles and Mod ones. But once you start reading it really comes into its own.
There are interviews with the guy that made Elvis's clothes way back in teh eraly 50s as well as The Beatles tailor but also up to date people like Wayne Hemingway.
My own criticism is that there isn't enough on American style but I guess since we stole a whole lot from the limeys it could be justified.
Can't recommend it enough.
Pete

Growing up anywhere usually revolves about two major things in your life...what you listen too and what you wear!
Paul Gorman has created here one of the most important must haves for anyone who has an interest in music and fashion.
This book has it all and I cannot recommend it highly enough, filled with fantastic and rare pictures it takes the reader on a fantastic journey about The Look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting take on Rock and Roll fashion. Very British ... 24 Sept. 2014

Interesting take on Rock and Roll fashion. Very British in its outlook, but early chapters feature the influence of American style.
