The picture quality is excellent, and I've tried a few games in full HD 1080p resolution and they look amazing, Tomb Raider Underworld, Batman Arkham Asylum and Call of Duty World at War all look stunning in Full HD. Blu-Ray playback is quite impressive as well as the movies look great using PowerDVD. The only slight problem with the monitor is its need a bit of callibration to make it look its best, as the colours can be a tad neutral looking, but after some adjustment they'll look great, and the image is nice and bright.
So if you are looking for a well priced, full HD monitor for gaming and movies, then you can't go wrong with this one.
Unfortunately, this monitor has now developed problems, after just over a year and a half. First the HDMI socket/circuit(?) failed and we just got the message that there was no signal, whether or not the cable was plugged in (tried with two cables). Then the monitor started going straight into shutdown mode as soon as it was switched on. This initially happened in HDMI mode, but now it's happening in DVI mode as well (the DVI and VGA inputs still work).
As far as I can make out, there's a 3 year guarantee on this monitor, so hopefully it will be repaired or replaced under that guarantee - I will update once it's sorted out. For now I'm dropping the rating to 3 stars, I will review this depending on how quickly the monitored is reppaired.
Update - December 2011
We now have this screen running on our new computer, which is not only faster, but also has a much better video card (and runs W7 64).
The result is pretty impressive. We are now using an HDMI connection (oddly, the cable isn't supplied with the screen) and the picture is noticeably better. We don't have a Blu-ray drive, so I haven't been able to test it in HD, but I did try a couple of programmes in HD from the BBC iPlayer and that looked pretty good (unfortunately the BBC claimed I didn't have sufficient bandwidth, so I wasn't able to test for long - strange, as I have pretty good 10mb broadband).
The only minor problem I've had is when disconnecting and reconnecting the screen - on reconnection, it makes a strange 'spitting' noise and doesn't show the picture for a minute or two .Read more ›
It has proved invaluable for photographic work and gaming and must be recommended
So far I've played Halo 3 ODST and Call of Duty Black Ops on my Xbox, both of which look great. I've also watched a lot of The Big Bang Theory through my Xbox, which I connect through an external hard drive, the picture quality is great. I've also got a few movies in .mkv format so I've connected my MacBook to watch them, 720p seems to work best for me and the picture quality is fine. I do notice however when I've got my MacBook & NEC connected that some of the writing is a little blurry , any subtitles have been fine but the writing on the Mac & Windows platforms have been blurry(My mac looks a lot better but that maybe because I hook it up through HDMI whereas I hook my NEC though RGB). However I only really use the LG to watch shows, stream games via Sopcast, etc, and it's perfect for that. Plus as it's technically not a TV I don't have to pay the e160 Irish TV license.
One pitfall is that the speakers aren't up to much, but in my experience this is the case with all monitors. I've already invested in a set of Logitech speakers, they were only 20 pound and the sound is great. It's really worth investing in a set of speakers if you plan to play games, or watch movies through this monitor. All in all I give it 5 stars as it doing exactly what I wanted.
