The LG IPS224 excels in price/performance ratio, it displays a stunning picture, even at the lowest brightnesses (to which I have it set on permanently), the viewing angles are spectacular (I really have found it to be very close to 180 degrees!), and last but definitely not least, the monitor is physically attractive, with it's very slim depth and the glossy black finish.
The choice in ports is brilliant, particularly for me personally as I run my setup from my laptop temporarily until a new desktop is bought, currently running the two using a HDMI port and the VGA port, and to my surprise, the image on both is identical.
The menu/settings on the monitor were a little difficult to understand at first, but within minutes they were easily interpreted. The ability to turn off the power LED I think is brilliant, and the rest of the settings are easily accessible.
I'm a bit of a gamer, and this monitor could not be beaten for the price, primarily playing Battlefield 3, it is very gamer friendly! The response time is perfect, the picture quality is perfect, and the resolution needless to say is perfect at a solid 1080p. Videos also display great. Power saving is also good with the idle consumption being 0 watts.
Also a graphics artist, again, this monitor is perfect with colour representation due to the IPS panel, colours are spot on, and I have definitely noticed a difference from my standard 900p LCD screen.Read more ›
The display comes in a small and relatively flat box with carry handle. Quite basic but protects the panel well enough and minimises waste. Out of the box, the screen was easily and toolless installed on its stand within a few minutes - no instructions necessary.
In terms of picture quality, it needs some adjustments to improve the colour tone. It tended to go into the red leaving you with a less "clean" white. This can be adjusted via the on-screen menus but I struggle to get really neat colours. Maybe that's just my personal taste. But no issues in terms of watching photos and perfect for office tasks. The picture itself is very sharp and crisp. Brightness is also good: I have it all the way down to zero and the display is still very bright - potentially too bright if your eyes are adjusted to a darker environment.
An other positive surprise was that I couldn't find a single pixel nor sub-pixel defect. I normally find myself on the unlucky side: My HP came with a zero pixel defect guarantee and I received a screen with a sub-pixel defect. Of course this is not covered under their guarantee. By the looks of it, LG got their quality control right.
The IPS is doing a great job - hardly any colour shift when the display is viewed from an angle even from nearly 180°. Resolution of the screen is full HD, i.e. 1920 x 1080. Personally I prefer the 16:10 format (like 1920 x 1200) to get the extra vertical space, but these panels are quite a bit more expensive.Read more ›
Out of the box, I've had to do no adjustments whatsoever as the default settings are pleasing to the eye (of course, that's subjective). However, the monitor has a multitude of settings so users can adjust the display to their needs.
Like its predecessor, the IPS225V, the monitor is very light. However, it also inherits the somewhat flimsy and potentially unstable stand, even though the stand has been redesigned somewhat. However, as the monitor doesn't noticeably vibrate whilst I'm typing, it's not enough to make me take off a star.
Whilst I'd say that this unit isn't as physically beautiful (nor quite as large) as the Dell ST2220L it replaced, it certainly outputs a much more eye-pleasing image than the aforementioned. The colour range, contrast and brightness of the ST2220L was so dull (and frustrating) IMHO that it didn't last on my desk more than 2 weeks before I got rid of it.
If you're looking for an affordable monitor with IPS display and very decent colour range etc, I can't think of a reason not to pick this beauty.
The only niggle is - and it gets five stars 'cos it might not happen to everyone - there is a thing called a 'color profile' that you will get familiar with, although like me you won't want to know anything about it. It is related to a green sheen issue when viewing photographs - see below for fix.
It's the right size, and somehow in combo with the LG blu-ray player/writer, allows 3d enabling - the kind that needs the older blue/red specs - we got some free with a kid's Barbie movie.
Short version, the green sheen could happen with any screen/graphics/video card combination, so I will just tell you how I 'configured' it, it was by going on the Adobe website, and I downloaded a colour/color profile that seems to generally suit a lot of situations.
Don't worry, I know nothing of this and managed to get it working, it is not an lg thing, it's a pc thing. You download the colour profile from some kind of a 1998 standard they dreamed up, and it fixes the 'green sheen' problem when using Microsoft picture viewing programs.
It takes up very little space, it's just a great product - push the hdmi connector all the way in when connecting at the back, or you will think this don't work, it's just a bit of a jam brand new.
