I would have bought one of these a lot sooner (5 years ago) but i did not because i though it would be a nightmare to install and then to enable it all and get it 100% fully working, i just thought i could do without all that hassle.
Well now i wish i just went ahead and bought one of these 5 years ago, it is truly brilliant, it was a breeze to fit and install, i just pushed it in to the slot, then pushed the two pins in that hold it in place and that was it, job done, it is also pretty much plug and play ( on windows Vista anyway ) as i did not have to install anything or muck about with drivers, my computer recognized it instantly and said it was ready to use, within 1-2 minutes after getting it out of the box i was burning CD's, its that easy.
It is also pretty fast, burning 18 tracks, that's 79m 57s of music to CD in only 2m 35s.
It is fairly quite for what it is, obviously there is going to be noise when burning disks as the disks can spin at thousands of revolutions a minute.
However, this is just the bare bones kit, so you will also need to buy Wired--Up 1 SATA Power Adapter Cable and 1 SATA Data Cable .
If you are thinking about buying this but can't make your mind up or don't know whether to buy it or not, just stop thinking and buy it now, you won't regret it.
Its at such a good price, i don't know how LG can make a profit on it.
Drive was easy to install (after memory installation this is about as straightforward as it gets) and was instantly recognised by my Win 8 system and available for use. It was then that I started to have some problems. Using the drive with the latest version of Imgburn I found that it would not read any faster than 3x and normally at just up to 1x speed making creating ISO images on the PC a tortuously long process.
Since this is something I do more than actually burning discs (relatively speaking I don't do either much at all) I was somewhat frustrated to the extent that I requested a product return from Amazon and ordered another drive (a Samsung SH-222AB). In the interim I tried and had the same issue with CDburner XP and a much older very (very) basic ISO creation program called LCISOcreator all of which had worked fine with my previous DVD drive.
While Imgburn would be my preferred program if I could get it to play nice with this drive I did find two free programs that seem to work well with it they been Burnaway Free and Infrarecorder meaning there's now no reason to send it back at all so I've used this drive to replace an acting up IDE drive in an older PC kept for backup purposes and will use the Samsung SH-222AB as my main burner since I've used this model before with no issues (it was my mistake to try save a few quid by buying the LG). Of the two burning programs I've found for the LG I'd pick Infrarecoder since it can be run as a portable app and because it dosen't try to install any unnecessary software unlike Burnaway Free does during instalation (the Ask Toolbar).
Finally with respect to noise levels they seem OK to me since you'd expect a drive to make noise when reading or writing at speed and it does adjust its speed to just 1x speed if you're watching a DVD which means you shouldn't be distracted by it watching a movie. In summary then this is an OK drive which is cheap to buy but in my experience has issues when used with certain reading and writing software.
So I searched on the LG website and the GH24NS95 is only shown on the U.S version not UK. [...]
When I looked in the section for download's, no firmware and only PDF manual files. So I called LG and was confirmed the GH24NS95 is in the UK. LG agreed about the website and passed on what I have found so hopefully there can be a firmware update to sort this and other issues out.
I am debating whether to send this back or just keep it for the sake of £14. I think this is only worth 3 stars for the reasons I have stated.
Here is some of the information from nero, about this drive.
