My grandmother has extremely basic computing requirements (email, online shopping and solitaire) but is very uncomfortable about significant changes to her technology. Each re-installation required retraining from the beginning, usually over several weeks, before she had got the hang of using it. She also requires a decent screen and a fairly low resolution as the eyesight isn't what it used to be.
The Chromebase has proved to be a revelation. It took around 15 minutes to assemble and fire up and approximately an hour before she was confident using it. Chrome OS allows a large range of screen resolutions and the monitor is very sharp. She cannot get over the start up and shutdown times and was uncertain that the machine had actually powered off when first shown how!
My grandmother seems to be getting to grips with this computer much more quickly than she ever did with Windows and Linux. She has had it for two weeks and so far I've not received any calls or emails for help. Best of all, software updates are handled automatically so I don't have to spend time on it whenever I visit.
Provided you are clear on Chrome OS limitations and capabilities before you purchase the machine I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this computer.
While we waited for the product to become generally available I created her a Gmail account and told her to use Chrome instead of Internet Explorer on the Windows XP machine. There isn’t much visual difference and she had no problem making the transition.
Two weeks later once the Chromebase was available we ordered it and as per usual Amazon delivered in super quick time with no problem. I pieced the Chromebase stand together (10 minutes), run the initial setup wizard (took about a minute) and that’s pretty much it. Now when she switches it on within 5 to 7 seconds she is presented with the login screen, she enters her gmail password (or browses as a guest) and instantly she is in Chrome and on the internet. Brilliant !
Great screen, runs pretty much silently, much cheaper than a full blown Windows PC. Its amazingly fast and simple, perfect for my mother’s needs and she is very happy. Im also now happy as im not getting the “the computer has stopped working” phone calls
Quick note, as many others have said, this is not a Windows PC, it’s a ChromeOS based internet device. Before you take the leap to ChromeOS based devices you need to do your homework and check it will meet your requirements. For my mother its perfect !
Let's get the bad part out of the way first.
The mouse. It's terrible. Feels very plastic and clicks are very loud. You'll want to replace this, in time.
The not so good
The keyboard is also very much on the cheap side. I do how ever type fine on it and it will do nicely until I can find a new Chrome keyboard or just replace it with a standard Mac or Windows keyboard.
It has fantastic viewing angels and I did a basic display calibration test on it and everything check out spot on. I only adjusted the gamma setting and everything was left on "stock" setting. You have adjust every setting you could imagine on the monitor. It stands very firm on the stand, but will shake a little if you bounce the table or the monitor. The stand has built in cable clip, making it easier to manage the cables coming out from the back of the unit. I have not testing if the display will wake up form HDMI activity. My PS3 is the old fat model, which doesn't support waking up the TV/Monitor.
Took 3 seconds, I kid you not. If you blink, you'll miss it! Chrome OS is just amazing and I have been using the unit none-stop and it's just a smooth and pleasant ride. I was curious about how well Chrome OS would display at 1080p, but it looks gorgeous!
They are decent at low og high mid volume, but lack bass and perform like your average laptop speakers. One thing to note, is that when you switch to HDMI, the speakers automatically switch over to audio input from the HDMI cable.Read more ›
