This is one of my 3 favourite books. I return to it again and again. Others have explained the content but suffice to say that, despite some of the sadnesses experienced in the story, the consolations of unexpected and enduring friendship are described here in such clear and haunting prose, I never tire of it. The landscapes, locations and backdrops are in harmony with the storyline. Having bought it for all my friends, they too have loved it as I do. Don't miss it. It really is to be treasured.

2.0 out of 5 stars Forgettable but some lovely moments. 18 Oct. 2013

It felt like the author had a collection of ' been there before' ideas for a story and then she jammed them all in to the one book. At times an unusual and hard to believe dialogue between the two women with the large age gap being what it was.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gentle, quiet, lovely read 21 July 2006
By just2more - Published on
Format: Paperback
Aptly named. This novel has a great sense of quiet and gentleness about it. It's the story of a somewhat unlikely friendship that develops between two women in a village in Sweden. Olsson captures beautifully the mood of the seasons and the place. I found it engrossing although truthfully not a lot can be said to happen. But it's about a developing friendship that doesn't require major events to keep the story engaging. It's stayed with me longer than many books I read, and it's one I'll read again.
The US edition of this is titled Astrid and Veronika
5.0 out of 5 stars Let me sing you... 12 July 2012

I read this as Astrid and Veronica. It has not only stayed with me, it served as the impetus for my own trip to Sweden to discover ny Scandinavian roots. A beautiful story, beautifully written. Olsson does not disappoint.

A moving account of shared pain between two women from different generations who find peace and understanding in each others company.
