The kits went together well and had a nice mix between functioning parts and intricate detail.. this kit felt like you could play with it without constantly disintegrating...rather than put on a shelf away from the younger kids! - it only took us an hour or so to build so perhaps the age range on the kit is a little conservative (8 year old needed minimal guidance).
I really liked how it was several standalone kits - it felt like more value for money that way..and helps with longevity.. you can play with the vehicles on their own all as a set - I also really enjoyed being able to re-configure the various elements (hook/unhook trailers).
The addition of the mammoth ‘on ice’ was a great touch..
All in all a well thought out kit - and one that truly lets the imagination run free! I look forward to testing out more in the series in the future!
As is sometimes the case with Lego there are the little elements of whimsy (coffee dispenser and mug in the science lab) but also some things you don't quite "get" initially or at all (there are some yellow things you put inside boxes, which I only much later realised are supposed to be snowshoes and can thus be put on the figures - the boxes have slots and if shaken around the snowshoes can come flying out).
The theme here is a train of arctic explorer vehicles which can be connected together - a self-mobile crane vehicle, towable science lab on sleds, self-mobile giant circular saw and towable sled/trailer. There is also a mammoth inside blocks of ice. The "story", if you like, is of arctic explorers freeing the frozen mammoth using the saw, lifting it onto the trailer with the crane, then towing it away (though I can't actually see, despite the picture on the box, how the mammoth can actually possibly affix to the trailer to do this). Maybe as an adult who has left behind childish things I'm really overthinking this too much, but it feels like relatively limited scenario for play; maybe children with active imaginations can make more of it.
3½ stars rounded up to 4.
Alongside and within these are 6 new mini figures and a handful of instruction booklets to put it all together.
I would say this collection is firmly aimed at the younger end of the Lego market as the builds are a lot more straightforwards than the average Star Wars kit and, visually, are a lot more appealing to smaller kids.
That is not to say there is not a lot to do though and this should provide any parent with a good few hours of concentrated silence at the very least!
Once built there are plenty of movable parts to make the finished products fun to play with and create scenarios for.
Once again, Lego have provided a winning kit. It only loses one star because I feel £85 is grossly overpriced for what you're getting (I would say the same of most kits) and closer to £50 would be (barely) more reasonable.
The set itself feels a little different to other LEGO City sets i've had in the past simply because the actual build time is quite short. This really isn't a complex build and you'll have the whole lot done within under an hour.
The set itself is made of 4 main components which are a monster truck with working crane, a mobile lab with a flip up roof to access the interior, a trailer with a chainsaw/buzzsaw and a final sledge/ski bike trailer. All 3 trailers connect to each other in various combinations.
As well as these 4 main components you also get a small ice cave, giant mammoth, 6 LEGO figures and a handful of accessories such as pick axes, walky talkies, snow shoes, etc.
All in all, this is yet another great LEGO product and highly recommended... As always though, it does seem very [pricey for what it is but that's par for the course with LEGO.
